Next week I plan on HAVING my 4 inch Cowl Hood on the car. And to make it look a lil nicer I thought I would beadblast my hood hinges. But to do so as u can imagine you will have to remove the hood springs. Is there any special method in doing so? Never done it so I was kinda curious. Thanks
Also I got a Functional Cowl Hood (Flap style) that I will be wanting to sale. Interested??

Go to the bank and get $1.00 worth of pennies. Open the hood wide open, insert 1 penny into every slot in the spring. Next step close the hood slightly and remove spring.

With the spring open, throw a rag or towel around it, then close the spring (be careful). The rag should hold the coil open enough to come off the hinge.

good tips, sure beats the way I've been doing it for years with pure muscle and visegips, and torn knuckles etc. :D

The fastest and safest method is to use a simple chain.
Please dont laugh at my drawing my hand really hurts, hence my picture looks like crap smile.gif
get yourself a chain link mender as shown in the pic. On one side the link is split but has a nut and threads so you can repair a damaged chain. By using this link you can easily removal and install the chain on the hood springs.

Once you got the chain on the end of the spring just a slight flex of the muscles and that spring is off. By the way am just pushing 6'0" and roughly 160lbs so am NO muscle man and I can do this without even THINKING of breaking sweat.
Cant be any faster or easier.

I'm for Erics chain idea. The first time I was shown this 20 or so years ago I thanked the good Lord I wouldn't have anymore busted knuckles. smile.gif
I am 5'8" 150 pounds and will do it with one hand. Painted hinges, chrome hinges take them off, put them on, no problem what so ever.

i put nails between each coil, they are easy to get inbetween the coils and easy to remove.

I'm with FDYFO. I used the nails...pushed them all the way thru. Springs practically fell off when I closed the hood a bit. The new, lighter springs were easy to put on by hand. Not a lot of muscle needed to pull them into position.
