PLEASE HELP !!! i have a 1970 chevelle ss with a 454 motor and edelbrock performer rpm 5600 aluminum heads. i have bought new hooker competition 2" primary tube headers and i put in new aftermarket motor mounts from energy suspension. i did not have a problem with driver's side clearance on the headers, especially around the proportioning valve or reverse lock-out linkage. the headers seem to clear fine on the driver's side, but on the passenger side, the primary tube closest to the front of the engine hits the frame bracket for the lower control arm. i noticed that this tube was welded together from the factory.i talked to someone at hooker and he said it had to be welding because there were two compound bends. does this sound like a screw-up with hooker,an aftermarket head problem,or a motor mount issue?? i feel i shouldnt have to modify $425.00 ceramic coated headers, especially for an a-body. please advise.

Does your Chevelle have big block frame stands? Small block frame stands will cause header fitment problems on the passenger side.

Excellent point. Re-Animator when I replied to your email I didn't think to mention that I was using tall solid motor mounts. I don't know if it made the difference or not, but as I stated the passenger side practically fell in. My car was well on it's way to being a race car when I got it so I don't know much about stock equipment.

No difference in engine placement with SB or BB mounts, in fact the 350 mounts are the same for the 396/454 in 1970. 307 mounts are a different width but still put the engine in the same position when used with the 307 frame stands. If your engine mounts fit fine over your frame stands without any extra slop or needing to spread them then they are the right ones. BB mounts being needed is a myth, you will most likely end up dinging the pipe for clearance.

I installed a 454 in my 67, and used a lakewood bellhousing that my hooker headers would not clear past.....I had to notch the bellhousing to get the engine to sit down on the motor mounts....just something you may not catch at first.

It's common to have to ding Hooker headers on big blocks with raised exhaust port heads. I'm surprised you don't have any clearance issues on the driver side also.

My Hooker 2" Comps fit great. No dings needed anywhere. But that's with the factory heads.
