It sent the number 4 rod into the pan. You can see 2 holes where the rod hit the oil pan above the crossmember and put the holes in it. The holes are midway between the bottome of the pan and the pan rail. The truck is an 86-87 model with good papers, not a whole lot of rust, it has a th400 tranny, and is an 8 lug 3/4 ton truck. I'm fairly sure that it is 4 wheel drive.

Now, with that being said.... all I am after is the engine, trans and would sell the rest. A buddy is interested in going halfs for the front doors, dog house and dash pad if they are in good shape.

So, what are the odds that the engine block survived and am I wasting my time and money?

I would put the odds at about 1% that the block didn't get damaged.

If it is a 4x4 the TH400 will need a complete tear down to change the main shaft if your plan is to use it in a 2wd application. I too suspect the block probably toast. Most burb from that era were used hard especially the K2500s. I wouldn't give very much for it.

When a rod breaks there's going to be pieces of it + bearing flying around
in the engine, I wouldn't risk buying it without knowing whether it's useable.
That's why engine dealers will always say "rebuildable exchange" so they can charge a core fee if it's too damaged to re-use.

OK, it's a 2wd.... sorry about the wrong info.

I sure wish it didn't throw that rod. Talk about a heck of a deal!
