A big mystery on my 68 Chevelle SS. I have the car sitting here in its origional paint (matador red) all faded, thats not the point.

You are going to need a picture of a 68 Chevelle SS infront of you to know what I am talking about.

Between the headlights (high and low beam) there is a peice of chrome which is attached to the grill. Got me so far?

On top of that you got the header panel, mine has trim there, I know the 69's have header panel extention chrome peices but not the 68.. or do they? I did a search on the web for pics using Google.com. 75% of the chevelle SS dont have the chrome which is assumed to be right, yet the other few have chrome there. Whats the deal?

I looked into my assembly manual for the 68 Chevelle, and on the schematics it shows a peice of trim there, but on the bottom notes 3 pages later it shows the part discontinued and taken off assembly. Is it possible that a few of the cars leaked out with this peice? This may be a question for some veteran chevelle experts. Thanks for your help.

Here is 2 examples

Note this car has the chrome peice above the grill chrome between the high and low beam

Note: THis one does not, and most Chevelles look like this.

Any ideas ?

Nope, Thad's doesn't.

I noticed this also.
I'll be watching this thread to see what the experts say.

My build date is the 2nd or 3rd week of April 1968, if that makes a difference.

On may 68 Malibu, that piece between the lights is part of the grill and not a seperate chrome piece. There is a bracket or brace that goes from the piece between the headlights and up to the bottom of the header panel. I might be mistaken, but all the SS and Malibu grill were the same meaning no extra pieces or chrome. Just SS were painted black in areas and the SS emblem.

Now you made me run out to the garage and look at my early production 68 SS that was built in Canada, It's got the chrome between the lights.. graemlins/beers.gif

I studied very hard with the assembly instructions (schematics), and the origional sales brochure. It appears only the early model concours came with it, AND 375hp came with the concours grill in some instances and have this peice. (As you know some legit 375HP 68's have grey grills, not black) Now this isn't 100% forsure, but I can garantee you 100% that the concours had this extra trim without a doubt. But this is still open for debate as you know, there are so many exceptions, expecially due to the strike in 1968.

My 68 does not have the chrome strip, but I have a diecast model also of a 68 that has it. Of course, its just a model....
