Just a quick question. I've found 4 colors I really like. When I find my color does PPG offer there colors in either BC/CC or SS, or are certain colors ONLY one or the other? How to tell? Thanks!
Phil :D

Well basically if your color choices are metallic you NEED to go with baseclear.

Yes you can order any paint color in baseclear or SS but spraying a metallic in SS is very very tough. You need to have a great understanding of several things. Proper gun tuning, proper reducer and hardner selection, spray technique.

If your color choices contain metallic or pearl you need to go with baseclear. Spraying a metallic SS can be done but its very hard, not something I suggest to the first timer.

Just remember some are B/C/CC Tricoats the colors change in Base clear mixes.

Heres a random thought. Have people, or is it possible to shoot a single stage, 3 coats or whatever. Wet sand and buff it, then lay down a coat of clear? Or does it not work like that?

Yes you can but why?
If you are going to spray clear why not spray basecoat instead of SS?
Not only would it be LESS work but cheaper.

I thought it may be less expensive to buy the ss paint, and some clear to lay over it. And less of a chance to screw up. Guess not :D Im just a little anxious and cautious about doing it. So many options.

What colors are you looking at buying?
Have the OE paint codes or PPG codes?
I can TELL you if that color is a metallic/pearl color.

If your color choice has ANY metallic/pearl in it what so ever painting with baseclear would be SOOOOOOOO much easier.

That dark colansse(sp?)metallic blue has atleast 2 different pearls in it, you mentioned it in a other post. That Chrylser color PBW I love has 2 pearls in it. If am thinking of the same honda color it has one metallic silver and 1 pearl in it. GM's Indigo blue has 2 pearls in it.

Also if you get runs/dirt/bugs whatever in that SS metallic, well have fun resanding and REPAINTING cus sanding and buffing a metallic SS is impossible.

If you pick a solid color with NO metallic or pearl in it then a SS will be just fine. But if you choose one with either of those then go with baseclear

I have 4 blues that I really liked. I wrote down the numbers they were all PPG, one was a BMW blue, a Honda blue, one strange car started with an A? I wrote them all down, I'll post them when I get off work. Im pretty sure there all metallic and or pearl. I checked out that blue you mentioned its a little too dark. I can find colors I like, but I havent seen anything drop jaw yet. It's hard to tell on a sample too, we'll see. But yeah I guess if its easier to sand and buff a clear coat job in case of dust and buggies, then that should be my route? Im not really worried about my handling so much, just my garage w/ possible contaminants, or it orangepeeling or etc etc.

Oh yeah, I got a gallon of primer and hardener, it's not ppg either :D Im almost good to go, I bought a second gun just for primer.

I have an angle grinder (craftsman or Black N Decker) I just got from a friend new/free, can I turn that bad boy into a buffing/polishing wheel? Im still going down my list of supplies needed after the paint is layed.

Most of the paints had 2 codes I may have written down the wrong one but let me know if these sound familiar?

2000 Honda Circuit Blue Pearl 5691
2002 Aston Martin Aviemore Blue Mica 103980
1994 GM Dark Cloisonne WA128A
2002 BMW Indi Blue Met 113926

These are all from the PPG book.

Well first off ALL of those contain pearl in them.
The PPG paint code will be a 4 digit code.
The book lists both the OE code and then PPG code.

For ex that Blue I like is OE code PBW, were the PPG code is 5695. If you went into any PPG store and gave them either of those codes you would get the right paint. As long as you have the OE code or the PPG code you are good.
