The transmision in my car is a M20. Does the M stand for Muncie?

Actually, no, it doesn't. It is just the buildsheet prefix signifying a transmission related option. The th-350 could also be called an M-38 and the th-400 a M-40. Just as the engines get their names Ls-6, Ls-5 etc...

M20 indicates RPO M20 which is a regular production option 4-spd. Could be a Muncie or the Saginaw used with the lower power engines. This is the way it was in 1966, not sure what was available in 1972. The M20 on a window sticker would have a 2 character code following it (exception code) that would indicate which M20 was installed. Looks like M20AA.

So actually, the M is just a letter assigned to the code, indicating a transmission. The air conditioning code started with C, such as C60, radios started with U, etc.

EDIT: Exception codes are more accurately called ECL codes (Exception Control Letters).
