: Modulator replacement and steel line
JimChevy Oct 27th, 05, 8:52 PM Can somebody tell me what holds the vacuum modulator on a 350 turbo?. Is there a clip that holds it on?. Also does it really matter running rubber hose from the carb back to the modulator or should it be steel line?. Thanks
Cameano Oct 27th, 05, 11:27 PM Always run a steel line with short rubber pieces on the ends for the modulator. You'll be happier, no mysterious late shifts when the hose collapses. Yes, the modulator is held on with a forked tab, kind of like a distributor hold down, but stamped steel.
Schurkey Oct 28th, 05, 1:50 AM And that steel tube will have a "camel hump" in it near where it plugs into the manifold. The tube will curve up, then down to the trans. This is to keep condensed moisture and fuel vapors from draining down to the modulator. Moisture will freeze in the modulator, and you'll have delayed and super-hard shifts when the temp goes below freezing--until the ice in the modulator melts, then everything's back to normal til it freezes again.

I run a straight one, haven't seen that problem around these parts yet. ;) :D
JimChevy Oct 28th, 05, 7:56 AM Thanks for all the responses. I'm assuming then it has a bolt holding the tab?. I looked on advance auto parts website but they don't sell a replacement steel line. Is this a GM dealer part?.
Schurkey Oct 28th, 05, 8:48 AM Perhaps it is still sold by GM or as a reproduction.
If it were me, I'd go to any "real" parts store, buy four feet (a few dollars worth) of bulk small-diameter brake tubing (double wall, seamless) and bend it by hand to suit.
Yes, one bolt secures the retaining tab for the modulator.
Cameano Oct 28th, 05, 9:31 AM I think Inline Tube has them. Don't have time to look it up at the moment, but I'm sure I've seen them. I know they make the tranny cooler lines, most likely also make the modulator line.
JimChevy Oct 28th, 05, 12:46 PM Thanks guys!. I'll check on that.
BillsCamino Oct 28th, 05, 1:10 PM Yeah..
Inline Tube
Classic Tube
