Just wondering, how much would a paint job on a cowl hood cost(i.e. matching a color, etc.)? Looking at a nice '71 Chevelle, but it has a gargantuan dome on the hood that looks kinda silly. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/rolleyes.gif I have seen good cowl hoods for less than $400, so I might consider buying one and getting it painted.
Thanks,
Kris H.

I think the gargantuan dome you're refering to is the cowl induction style hood. Unless of couse you its not and then I guess you had better come up with pics.

Paint work, part by part is tricky with aged paint. if the paint is too old and the painter use the stock mixing the hood would look Factory new while the rest of the car looks old.

You are absolutely right about aged paint and all that. I do know what a normal cowl (SS) hood looks like, this one's gotta be 4 inches high though. I'll e-mail you a pic. I'm going down to see it tomorrow. It's about 3 1/2 hours down there too.
Thanks,
Kris

That looks like an L88 hood. My advice is if it is an L88 style SELL IT. If my car weren't parts on the hoof I'd offer to snag it. If you are interested I can hook you up with an interum stock hood thats been punched for factory hood pins.

I might be able to use that hood on my 71!
Is it steel or fiberglass?
Let me know if you want to get rid of it.
not sure how to ship it though.....
you can reach me at pctriolo@hotmail.com

As for paint cost, sorry but If I do find a deal on the hood I need, I'll let you know after I get it painted myself!!!

Well, now that I've seen the car up close and bought it, there is actually nothing wrong with the Corvette hood scoop. The only downside is the fact that it's a fiberglass scoop grafted onto a steel hood. Check out the better pics at my site: http://www.geocities.com/mist_hunter01/71Chevelle.html

Time to change the hood if it's been glassed on. Although the older cars metal is thicker, I've never seen a glassed hood last.
As for painting another hood.
Find out what the paint is ie. BC/CC or SS
Is it enamel? or what.
A good painter can tell the difference.
As for price, I'd charge about 300. to 450. dpending how the other hood looked. Does it need filler, blasting etc. If all it needed was sanded, primed, resanded and painted a single stage color. I'd charge about 300.$
