Not for me...but a buddy of mine has a built Chevy 350 engine and one of his bolt holes for the starter is broken off. (I think they said it's the outermost one) They're wondering if it's possible to take a bolt, cut the head off, then weld the cut end up inside the block and sort of make a "stud" for the starter? How well will that work? Or is he screwed and have to get another block?

The stud would be 4-5" long and wouldn't allow for the installation of the starter - I'd try welding the broken piece back on or build up the area with weld , redrill, and helicoil.

That is what i would recommend as well. Weld, redrill, helicoil.

Don't know how much of the block is broken off, but had a similar situation on a 400 block. Was able to drill and tap a set screw hole (1/4-28) into the block and anchor the bolt so that it wouldn't back out. Yes, temporary fix, but it worked.

Tell him to look into Powermaster starters. I had a chip off my outter mounting hole and two good cracks on the innermost hole on my stroker. Powermaster makes some starters that use all three bolt hole locations. Next time the engine comes out I'll get it fixed right, but this solution has worked perfectly and that Powermaster works every time. The one I got is a Powermaster XS Torque mini starter. Good luck.
