: Should I buy it?
atlantaboy Oct 26th, 05, 4:19 PM This is a Ford question, sorry.
From a co-worker's grandfather I have the opportunity to buy a 1947 Ford Coupe flathead, light blue.
It is one owner and has not been started or out of the garage since the mid '60's.
No rust except a little surface rust on the front bumper from opening the garage door every now and then. Covered in boxes and storage junk.
I haven't seen it yet though.
He mentioned $500-$1000.
What would it take to get it running? Have rats eaten all of the wiring?
Could I make a profit off of it or put more into it and make it a weekend car? My wife really likes that idea. I hear the flatheads were pretty weak in such heavy cars though. How hard to convert to 12-volt and put in a 350?
Ideas, suggestions? I'm open to any and all advice and thoughts.
Thanks,
Danny
Professor_SS Oct 26th, 05, 4:25 PM If you don't I will........ make a nice street rod, or custom, or restore it and join the numbers matching, AR set. Someone on here says he has numbers matching air if the tires are flat, might not have it back that far however so it might only ever be a number 4 car or is it 2? can't remember that ridiculous numbering system. :D
1BLACKHARLEY Oct 26th, 05, 4:39 PM even if that car is a total p.o.s. you'll part it out for a lot more than $1,000. fenders, hood, doors, trim, etc. you can't go wrong. if it's in good shape, drop a crate in it. if the wiring is gone, e-z wire loom will do the job cheaply. this is a no lose car. unfortunately what will happen is, somebody will open thier big mouth, and he'll find out, it's worth thousands more than he's offered it to you for. volunteer to bring a trailer, and remove the boxes yourself. get it paid for and home a.s.a.p. these oppritunities don't come around for many of us. get it done now!
Tom Hendricks Oct 26th, 05, 4:41 PM Own it !!!!!!
dittoz Oct 26th, 05, 4:42 PM buy it NOW! Before someone else comes along, or the inevitable neighbor shows up and tells him "its a classic".
GIT, BOY!
BillsCamino Oct 26th, 05, 4:45 PM Danny,
I think you're local.
If a truck/ car trailer is an issue for you...I've got one available and sitting here collecting pine straw! ;) You've welcome to come get it.
Drop me a PM if 'ya need the Ford transportation.
chevyfiedRAT Oct 26th, 05, 7:02 PM grab it, if you don't want it i'll be more than glad to take it off your hands.
as for the flatheads they only produced around 90 hp but look at the pistons there tiny, as for upgrading to 12v its will take some time but its not that hard.
Umass Oct 26th, 05, 8:31 PM Git-R-Done go buy it already.
Alwhite00 Oct 26th, 05, 8:42 PM I'd look for a donor v8 - auto and drop in it.

Chevelle408 Oct 26th, 05, 8:51 PM If you don't I will. Is the car located in GA.?
atlantaboy Oct 27th, 05, 8:32 AM Thanks for the advice. I guess I'll tell him that I'll get it as soon as I move next month, after I look at it. Like Clark Howard says, It's such a good deal, buy it now, decide later what you want to do with it.
Bill, thanks for the offer. You're in Marietta, right? I'm in Gwinnett. However, he's even offered to deliver since it's not that far.
Thanks,
Danny
atlantaboy Oct 27th, 05, 4:12 PM I think I may have been a little mistaken. Turns out it is a sedan, not a coupe. I didn't realize that they had 2-door versions of both. It has the longer roof line and longer backseat windows.
How much less desirable does that make it?
Is it still something I should jump at?
Thanks,
Danny
dittoz Oct 27th, 05, 4:28 PM I'd be willing to bet it's still a deal, and a h*lluva fun car to do.
Worst case, like Harley siad, parts are going to be worth at least that.

dude, sedan or not. it is a desirable car. get this thing home and part it out if nothing else. but it's still a car to get. look in hemmings etc. and you'll see the the prices of these vehicles parts. it's a no lose, deal...i'd bet the trunk on that car is worth $600....

I'd get it.
d1_bradley Oct 27th, 05, 7:50 PM If its all there, its probably worth somewhere around $5k, if it runs and drives closer to $10k. Done, probably near $30k with a flathead if done correctly.
