My car is going in for a new paintjob and i'm removing all the chrome. How about the roof drip rails? can they be removed without damaging them? how are the repops quality? By the way the ones on there now are very oxidized. Can they be cleaned up if I don't remove them? thanks Bob

On my Elky the drip rail mldgs. are aluminium. VERY FRAGILE!! I believe the the sedans and coupes were aluminium too. They are a friction fit that involves the upper portion hooking over top edge of drip rail, lower is massaged and snapped into place. They are very hard to remove without damaging them. Unless they are loose the bottom has to be pried loose, often resulting in stress marks and bending of moulding. Have no idea on quality of replacemants being sold. There have been some previous posts regarding buffing and restoring these parts. Search the archives. Good luck, Karl

When I had my 64 El Camino painted, I decided it would be best to leave them alone. Masked 'em off good, then cleaned them up good with chrome polish.

When it was all done, the car looked so good overall, that those moldings really weren't noticable.

Unless you've got a line on replacements, I probably wouldn't try to take them off.

Good Luck with your car!

You can remove them with a bottle opener with tape on it. Carefully pry up from the bottom starting at the front. Now getting them back on is another story.

do a search on this site for "drip rails" and you should find a number of posts where people describe how to remove them. I removed mine on my 65 auto and they came off fine, after I read all the posts. Never put them back on yet tho.

just removed mine last night.they are not hard to remove, they are just a press fit. I used a flatblade screwdriver with tape on it. you will first have to remove the retaining (corner) piece. this piece has tabs on each end that you may have to pry outwards just a little and pull up. on the rail pull outwards on the bottom of the rail and then up.This is one area you MUST take your time as you do not want to bend these pieces. I'm not sure how they will go back on as I havnt done this before, but I think a small hammer and block of wood the close the C channel up slightly and then tap them back on with the block of wood.

Ditto what RC 70 said. I took mine off with a can opener with tape wrapped around it and it worked slick.

I took mine off the same way, but with a new paint job coming I bought brand new ones.
