I am looking at a project car that was partially stripped to bare metal. The car is in the Southern California/San Diego area, so its not rotted (I don't think there's any actual rot), but surface rust has covered the bare metal body panels...

Whats the best method for removing the surface rust?

Sanding with a D/A sander?

Blasting? I know not to use "sand" because of heat build up/warping, but will other media do the same, because I am assuming the rust will need more aggressive action to remove than paint would...

If blasted, I would have a pro shop do it anyway.

I haven't bought this project yet, and its 500 miles away, so I am really just trying to get an idea of if this project is worth it to me...

Thanks,

Tony

A da sander wont touch that rust.
3M makes some pretty sweet little clean wheels called clean-n-strip #07466. Eastwoods also sells them, look like black sponge discs.

Id media blast it, plastic will only work on paint. It wont touch rust. One blasting shop here in Iowa uses walnut shells, another uses glass beads for light rust. Had some tin work blasted for my '45 John Deere B, used a mix of plastic and glass, stuff came out great.

Hey SEVT!
I have a 55 model 80 John Deere Wheatland. They sure are a lot easier to restore than the chevelles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
