I am going to look at a 1965 Chevelle convertible, the only think I know is that it is an ss convertible v8 car vin (138675E155xxx). Currently it does not have the original motor it is a 402 block. How do I identify if it is a z16, the car has power disc brakes, 12 bolt rear and tach and gauges. I plan to go look at it either tonight or tomorrow morning, I need help to determine what this car may be, so I know if it is worth paying for.

Thanks

Didn't they only make one z16 convertible?

The z16 had power drums 11", not discs, unless its been upgraded.

160-mph speedometer, AM/FM multiplex stereo with four speakers, an in-dash tach and a dash-mounted clock. Frame braces and two extra body mounts, I don't know where at though. Z16 tail panel and i think a remote mirror in there too.

The E in the VIN for the assembly tells me it isn't a Z 16, unless it is really a B. There are other things on the cowl plate that denote a Z 16.

Check out this (http://www.z16chevelle.com/welcome.htm)

Total Malibu SS 396 production was 201 cars with one reportedly a convertible. It is not known to survive. About 65 Z16 coupes in restored or unrestored condition still exist making them one of the rarest and most desirable muscle cars.

I thought the convertable Z16 was owend by a GM person, and doing the 70's he wreaked it and did not think it was anything speacial and he had it crushed

Hey TMAN did you get a chance to look at it. Was it what you hoped it would be?

check out the registry at www.z16chevelle.com it has all the vin info for the ones know to remain in existance. THe 2 prototypes had a vin letter B designating the Baltimore assembley pland the reaming came from Kansas city with the production numbers after the K starting somewhere in 164 or 165.

Rumor is Semon 'Bunkie' Knudsen had one but it's never been proven or disproved. No documentation, photos, or even a write-up that I've seen to authenticate the rumor. You'd think with the interest someone would turn up something.

There was a claim here a couple of years ago about a triple gold convertible from some GM engineering shop although gold wasn't a color option although Sierra Tan paint is close, Saddle interior is close, and a Beige convertible top might pass muster.
