: 69 chevelle grille
mkarstm Dec 15th, 02, 1:09 AM Does anyone know for sure which way the grilles came out originally? The repro grille is black and the outer grille has silver or grey on the tips of the ridges. which one is correct for the Chevelle SS? The one outer grille molding is NOS. I apreciate all the help guys! Thanks!
RatMotor69 Dec 15th, 02, 9:18 AM For the Chevelle SS's, the tips of the ridges are black, just like "in between" the grids in the grill. Malibus, and other non-SS models had their grills painted with silver on the outer tips of the grids.
For an SS, the only parts of the grill to be silver are the horizontal bars on the bottom and middle of the grill, and the corresponding bars on the left and right extensions.
To make matters more confusing, the original SS grill had stainless trim bolted to the center bar where the SS emblem bolts to. This trim is similiar to the trim on the bottom horizontal bar. The current grill is a service replacement part that does not feature the provisions to bolt the trim to. Instead, the contour of that trim is molded to the grill. The service replacement part is correct for the 300 Deluxe models where the grill with the stainless center trim is correct for the SS models and Malibus. However, I am sure there were exceptions to this rule, like the SS 300 Deluxe cars.
Hope this helps.
Rick

mkarstm Dec 15th, 02, 9:33 AM thanks rick !! your information really helps
Dean Dec 15th, 02, 9:52 AM Just FYI, more than you asked for but there has been quite a few posts about the 69 grill
I finally figured out if the center horizontal plastic bar has no pre drilled holes for the molding, it's not correct for a Malibu or SS and not possible to make it look correct by drilling holes and stacking the chrome on top of the bar

plain 69 Dec 15th, 02, 7:53 PM I just pulled my old 69 grill out and it appears to be an original SS grill but it has the center piece at the top where it screws to the grill missing. I will try to J.B. weld another piece in and try to save it because the rest of it is pretty nice. I forgot how hard one of those grills were to find if you don't want the 300 grill. Thanks for revisiting this subject.

I may be wrong but isnt this what you guys are looking for?
hope this link works? http://www.goodmarkindustries.com/HomePage.html
This looks to have the holes but it is a reproduction.
T.C.
How about you guys just go to the Goodmark web site, look under Chevell "grills" and in the 69 section they have two different types.
The one with the holes is the one I am talkin about.
sorry for the mess............

Joey B Dec 15th, 02, 9:53 PM Actually, the 300 Deluxe SS had the same grill as the Malibu SS396. Only the Non-SS 300 deluxe and the Nomad station wagon used the service replacement stlye grille
RatMotor69 Dec 15th, 02, 9:59 PM Try this link:
http://www.goodmarkindustries.com/HomePage.html
Part number 4032-050-692 looks to be the correct grill, but the middle horizontal bar where the stainless trim bolts to should be silver, like the bottom horizontal bar.
Easy fix though, but that looks to be the one!

I agree, that sure does look like one that would accecpt the center molding, it has the pre drilled holes

69SSRat Dec 16th, 02, 4:59 AM Well I will have to disagree on the paint the cars mostly out of Atlanta were not blacked out the tips were silver on the 69SS
plain 69 Dec 16th, 02, 10:05 AM Is that a new reproduction of the malibu/SS grill? I have never seen one with the holes already drilled. I wonder if the chrome sticks out too far on that one in the center as the non-drilled ones? It would be nice if were an exact repo of the Malibu/ss grill.

Don_Lightfoot Dec 16th, 02, 11:53 AM I'm going to add a little tidbit here for what it's worth. There have been several threads on here over the last couple of years regarding the 300 Deluxe and the center grill molding on SS models. The general consensus from the gurus on here indicated the 300 Deluxe Models, with the SS option, did not get the center grill molding. Most of these cars have the molding, including mine, simply because it looks better. This subject is obviously still open for debate.

Goodmark list the grill as an "SS"/Malibu repo. they also have and show a picture of the so called "service replacement" 300 type without the holes and the fake trim molded onto the center part of the grill.
Why doesnt someone call/email Goodmark and ask?

Dean Dec 16th, 02, 11:01 PM Don, I *think* the confusion is because of the difference between the standard 300 and the 300 Deluxe SS
I bet the non SS ones had no center molding and all the SS cars did (just my theory)
Anyway after all these years it's good to know that you can finally get a replacement that is actually made for the center bar molding
I'd be interested to know about the quality and even a Malibu grill would be ok because there is hardly no noticable difference between the Malibu grill and the SS grill
I have three upstairs already, two without the pre drilled holes http://www.chevelles.com/forum/redface.gif and one Malibu grill that needs to be glued back together

Joey B Dec 17th, 02, 1:38 AM It sure looks as though they are repopping the SS grill from that pic... I know i'm not gonna be the first guy to buy one though... I'm betting getting that repop grill to fit right will be about as hard as trying to install a center molding on a 300 deluxe GM grill! But thats just my guess, judging by how repop anything else seems to fit! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
mkarstm Dec 18th, 02, 12:10 AM Well guys , looks like we re-visited the center bar on the 69 grille pretty well. Is it the general consensus that the SS grille was black and all others were silver tipped? Any other opinions on this one? oh by the way I "stacked"the molding on top of the center bar. Looks petty darn good too. Found an easy way to attach it too but cant think of the name of the fasteners I used. I know it isnt correct but does not lok out of place or awkward. Again, thanks for all the input.
Joey B Dec 19th, 02, 12:33 AM I have the "stacked" deal on my elky too, if you dont know its wrong it looks fine, but i DO know its wrong and it bugs the crap outta me...I'm REAL tempted to look into one of these new repop goodmark grilles if they do in fact exist.

black&redss Jan 19th, 03, 10:56 AM I just purchased and installed the repo SS and malibu grille. Fits PERFECT..you will need to paint the center bar argent silver though...mouldings, upper and lower fit exact..I have NOS ones. Only difference from orig. is lower mounting screw holes are slotted, not a striaght through hole and extra support added at upper center mounting srew, like the ones on the sides..could cut out if very fussy. This thing matched my original 3938180 grille. It is moulded in black plastic like the current GM offering. Orig. was of a white or cream colored plastic. Minor diffences on backside...not apparent unless you look very hard. Current GM is also different on back...design change?? One thing is for sure, most originals are broken or warped. Belive me, I would NOT put this on my car if it did not FIT or look orig. This only the second part on this car that repro. This will probably be all that is available in years to come.

black&redss Feb 1st, 03, 5:54 PM Believe me buy one and try it..........You will be surprised...........IT is a EXCELLENT repro..........if it was not, it would NOT be on my car........and like I said earlier.....I am not a advocate of repro.....Just thought I could help.....Jim
69ssragtop Feb 1st, 03, 9:01 PM Rick, Nice 69 wish I had kept my first car.Bought it for 350.00 in 78 (no Bull****) The guy I bought it from( I was 3rd owner) lost his license with it and parked it with a fresh .30 over build with 2000 miles on it.Needless to say here in Peoria it was a marked car and I too lost my license w/it.
A battery was all that I had to purchase to drive it away.I got it so cheap cause I was beating on his door every other week for almost a year trying to buy it.I guess persistence prevailed.1969 Chevelle SS
I cant remember the correct name for the color >
Maroon met w/orange-tomato red stripes w/blk bench interior(I dont know how many arguements I got in with people about SS's not being built with a bench seat)
375 hp/396-turbo 400 12blt 4:11 posi
Power Brakes but no power steering(got great big arms quick for a kid)
Damn I sure miss that car.Just found a couple of pics of it in the attic a couple days ago.Cant believe I still have em. A guy plowed into the back of it with a truck and TOTALED it.I should have kept it and rebuilt it not knowing then what this car is worth today.I read a hot rod or car craft article in like 1986-7 and if my memory serves me correctly they that said only 1397 were built w/a bench seat SS package. But knowing about Chevelles what I know now I can't fiqure out where they came up with that # being they generally were built as Malibus with the SS package option.Anyone out there have the real #'s? Also how are you guys putting up pictures in your post? I can scan it and put it up if I knew that answer(Has those cute-front end crippling HI-Jacker rear shocks from the early 70's on it inc the cb antenna on the deck lid...........cool)
