I've called all the "local" salvage yards andeven some not to local and am coming up empty on this supplemental vacuum pump. I've gone online with no luck. You guys/gals must have better yards around you than here. Pete

What is this "supplemental vacuum pump" for and what year(s) did it come on?

Mike it boosts vacuum. Some motors with big cams don't produce enough vacuum to the brake booster therefore you lose the "assited" part of your brakes and the pump helps overcome that. Here is some the cars it's found on. The one I'm looking for is an electric one(mounts on drivers fender well) not the one that runs off the engine.

Oldsmobile: 82 Firenza-J, 86 Cierra-A, 82 Cadillac: Cimmaron
Buick: 82 Skyhawk-J, 82-85 Skylark-X, 82-84 Omega-X

Chevrolet: 84-86 Celebrity, 82 Caprice-B, 82 Cavalier-J, 82-85 Citation-X
Pontiac:85-86 6000, 82 J2000, 82-84 Phoenix-X

Well....there you go. My curiousity was that I have this original GM looking vacuum reserve cannister that I should post a pic of here as I know someone needs it for something. I have a SSBC vacuum pump and they aren't cheap and I can't imagine finding one in a salvage yard.

Lance I've looked and thought about the canister but for some reason I don't feel comfortable with it. I'd rather have something not dependant on the motor/cam.

Yeah the pumps are expensive. So far the cheapest new one with core is 165.00, that's why we're trying to locate one from a salvage yard. Have also considered hydroboost but at 600.00 new, out of the question right now. If we can find the right stuff at a reasonable price via the salvage yard we'll consider hydroboost. Pete

so Mike how's that pump and res working for your brakes? reason i ask is i just built a sbc that should make about 12in. hg at idle. prolly not enough for my pwr disc brakes.

Sean,

My car has been waiting to run with it's procharger D1SC for one full year. I have no idea if the pump is going to do jack. However, I will say that it is plenty loud, although with steel braided line as an outlet, it reduces the noise a lot (the longer the line, the better). Tom (a.k.a.-HOT66SS) has the same pump and I think it works fairly well for him. I am not using a resevoir yet, although I think he is and it does work well.

cool, thanks. was just curious. I have a long way to go on my car till it is on the road too. just got the motor back from the builder which sucks (well not really, i am pretty stoked to see it done). i was deployed to afghanistan for the last 5 months, which kinda killed my plan to have the suspension done and ready to drop in the engine and trans when it was done. oh well, i guess seeing it staring at me from the engine stand might motivate me to get the rest done!

one thing I learned about wrecking yards, if it's not a big ticket item or common stuff like rotors cv shafts and such, they usually say they don't have it. That way they don't send the yard mechanic looking all over the place for a part nobody will probably come and get anyway.
If you show up on their doorstep at least they know your serious, and a lot of them will tell you to go look for yourself.
And if they let you go look, make sure you take a detour and do some scrounging while your there. I found a set of IROC Z rims at a pick your part. the guy had no clue they were even there. they sell rims for 5 bucks and tires for 10. I didn't bring cash that day so I had to stash them in the trunk of a monte carlo, when I did pick them up I brought a dolly and just set them up outside the office, they just charge me 15 apiece without looking at the rims.
found 3 15x7 and 1 15x8 ralleys later paid 20 for all 4 plus got the 4 trim rings for 7 inch wheels to boot.

Most of those cars were crushed years ago :D. Scrap metal has more value than the dollar parts those cars might sell. Heck most of the yards around here have very few pre-2k cars for parts anymore. All the others are picked over and on the crush pile.

I agree with Jim Mac. To say more about it, YOU need to be the one easy to deal with, which sounds kind of backwards but works.

My wife was looking for a bunch small interior parts for her 90 Mustang convertible. The auto salvage had several Fox cars, but it's not worth it to them to chase small parts. We kind of expected that going in and asked when would be the best time for them. The main counter guy said "come back Saturday an hour before we close and ask for me" which we did. When we went in on Saturday, he told one of the kids working tear down so us all the Fox Mustangs and let us pick the interior parts we wanted. Voila, we were in the yard! We ended up with two door panels in the correct color that had already been removed from a car plus a pile of small plastic parts for $50 bucks. I think the door panels where worth $50 a piece based on the condition.
