: New Paint, Changed mind, need some helpful help....
feedphillipnow Apr 21st, 04, 1:00 PM I've read so many posts, and started quite a few of them myself, on PPG and painting options. For the past few months I was planning on building a litte booth in my garage and paint with BC/CC PPG now that I am 95% finished with the bodywork I have been going through the pro's and con's of spending in the $900 ballpark on paint alone and having something go wrong. I couldnt live with a $900 mistake and all that waisted work! I know for a fact that I will be shooting the primer within the next few weeks and block sanding, prepping everything to paint. My main question here is what should I do, and where should I take it. I was thinking of maybe buying my PPG and having someone shoot it for me at Macco or someplace. Or even purchasing there better line of paints and having them shoot it all.
Just need help making some decisions. This isnt going to be a show car or anything, just a darn nice ride thats nice to look at.
Professor_SS Apr 21st, 04, 4:03 PM I paid a couple of guys with a shop to help do the final spray on mine. There is just way to much dirt and dust in my old garage. keeping dirt out of the paint is almost impossible!!!
I have a friend that got his 79 firebird ready and paid Maco to do their better quality job on it and it came out very nice. I think if you tell them what you want to use and offer to pay a few extra bucks, and have it all ready to be taped and sprayed that they'll do a good job on it.
feedphillipnow Apr 21st, 04, 6:52 PM Thanks Pro. Yeah my garage is a death trap dust storm all the time. Wash my car and it's dusty hours later, spray booth, wet floors, dust a couple dozen times, still risky... plus i could personally screw up. I'd love to do it myself, but its not worth the risk :D If anyone has had experiences with Macco higher priced jobs, or even bringing them some PPG let me know! Pictures too, If anyone also has a couple minutes to kill click my link and check out some of my updated photos, let me know what color or combinations you think would look good. I can't decide smile.gif
:D :D
sevt_chevelle Apr 21st, 04, 7:16 PM why not take your car to the local body shop all prep'ed and ready to go. Pay the shop to spray the paint.
Much rather spend a few more bucks to have a PRO do it then some wanna be at Macco.
firstchevelle Apr 21st, 04, 10:58 PM I tried that once, guy at the paint shop wouldnt touch it. He said he wouldnt do a paint job unless he did the foundation, so i took it home and let my father spray it. I think i got a better job with him spraying it anyway :D
71chevy0192 Apr 21st, 04, 11:02 PM My only advice would be not to bring it to Macco. They don't do good work. But if you are just looking for a cheap job and don't really care that all they do is tape things off....go for it.
SS_Dave Apr 22nd, 04, 8:41 AM Buy a small amount of paint and shoot a test panel. Color sand and clear and buff.
This will give you a good idea if you are up to it or not.
67shovel Apr 22nd, 04, 8:42 AM Why don't you go ahead and prime and block the car until it's straight. See if your gun control seems all right to you and the primer coat is going on nice. If you feel good about the priming, maybe spraying the paint isn't out of the question. I know that if you don't paint this one yourself....you'll probably always farm out the paint jobs on your future rides. Also, since this one is not for show, maybe it's the perfect chance to get your feet wet.
