Hi guys,

My brother accidentally backed my 69 Chevelle into a dumpster but amazingly only about 6 inches of the painted on(not a decal) side stipe on a rear quarter panel was damaged. My question, can such damage be repaired in a body shop without re-painting the whole panel and should the entire stripe on the quarter be repainted? The panel was not damaged at all including the paint. Also does the entire quarter panel need to be repainted?? Looking for some guidance before I take the car to a body shop where I know the owner and he does good work on restorations of older cars(he has a 69 Chevelle as well).

I think you answered your own question...
"before I take the car to a body shop where I know the owner and he does good work on restorations of older cars(he has a 69 Chevelle as well)".
What color? Factory type stripe? Is it under the clear?
If you know, and trust this guy, let him have a look at it.
All we can do is guess without seeing the car.

The color of the car is Dover White, the blue side stripe is original style but the fender has been replaced and restriped. Body is original except for this fender. Car is 80% original. Pictures of the car are on Webshots as noted above on the link. Under the clear coat? yes. I have no pictures of the damage to the stripe but the damage is down to the bare metal and the metal is not damaged in any way.

If the stripe is under the clear. and the metal is ok, I'd scuff the clear on the whole quarter panel. Then prime and repaint the damaged area on the stripe. Then clear, color sand and buff the panel. With a vinyl top it is easier to end the clear at the molding. Which,by the way, i would remove. Then paint up to the molding clip studs....

Then hand the bill to your brother..
