: Which one? M21Y T-5 or TKO 600
PickSS Oct 20th, 05, 12:53 PM I'm trying to decide which way to go on my 66 chevelle. Body and chassis are separated...resto in progress. Currently it has a borg warner T-5 rated at 300Hp/300 torque max. The motor is a 67 396 30 over with a some what lumpy cam ported and polished heads 1.7 rockers on solid lifters, single palne intake and a holley 750 db through stock exhaust mainfolds. Compression should be around 11-1....might need to lower this for serious driving time. I plan on driving this thing alot, with the idea of running some track time..auto cross and such. My guess is the t-5 will blow up the first time I drop the clutch to lay a patch. The M21Y will be strong and given the 4th gear overdrive at .85 highway driving should be fine. It will also bolt right up! The TKO 600 will require some body mods but will handle 600 HP. I can do any of these for transmissions for around $1800 from Ed Hartnet.
What would you do? Thanks, PickSS
LateNight72 Oct 20th, 05, 1:31 PM I'd go with the Tremec. They have either a .64 or a .8x (.82?) version availible. The only difference is OD. The 4 speed will not have the same range as the 5spd..

Thanks for your responce. I'm leaning that way but want to get all my cost figures in order first.
Adman Oct 21st, 05, 3:34 PM pick the TKO, you'll be much happier over all.
Wally Oct 21st, 05, 4:52 PM Couple of members have done the Muncie swap and are happy with the results.
I can tell you building one of the M21Ys is not like a regular Muncie, much harder to assemble.
Don't use the HP and torque numbers to make the decision, there are none for a muncie so it makes it hard to compare apples to apples.
The TKO is a good solution, the kits make it very easy rght down to a template for cutting and new metal for the patch.
vrooom3440 Oct 21st, 05, 5:11 PM One advantage of the TKO not mentioned yet is the lower first gear ratio. Makes it easier to get things rolling and easier if you find yourself driving in a parking lot (it slows down further/better).

Ed and I go back about 25 years and he is a very competent manual transmission specialist. He should be able to steer you in the right direction. Ask him what he thinks.
My personal feeling, the more gears the better! Being realistic, the TKO has a wider gear spread than the M22Y and you could utilize a 3.08:1 to 3.73:1 differential. But, this choice also depends on your tire diameter and engine camshaft profile. The M22Y does not have the lower 1st gear as the TKO. The M22Y is also designed to be used with a 4.10:1 differential.
Gas prices are NOT coming down, build that car for the long haul!

Wally Oct 22nd, 05, 11:30 AM Every time someone mentions gas milage and a BB chevelle in the same breath I got to chuckle. You want fuel economy buy a Honda or some other rice rocket. It gets even funnier when the motor is a 502 or 540, some are bigger yet.
I think the amount you drive your car and how far you intend to drive has more to do with the end result. If you are like me the car is a toy and test platform, no long trips, just short, quick blast.
If you do things like the power tour and lots of driving then you need to consider how hard the motor will buzz going down the super slab.
I run a 3.55 rear and 285/60/15 tires with a M22W, not to hard on the motor. I have a 3.73, 3.90 and a 4.10 some place just in case I get froggy.
:beers:

Wally, this is exactly what I was trying to get across. Well worded!
