Guess I'm a redneck too... I have four vehicles as well... It was five until I finally stripped the camino donor and sent it to it's final resting place... Moment of silence..

HEY! i resemble that remark, six vehicles, not counting the kids car, and one is an elky. i can't see anything good coming from this. you have to cut her loose now, or it'll be too late. hell! next thing she'll want you to start choosing between groceries and your cars. paying the bills, or your cars...heck, you can sleep in your car, but you can't drive your house.....

It took 9 months before I finally got the real reason my wife hates my '68 El Camino so much... it is "too redneck" for her.

(she has driven almost nothing but Honda's car/vans her entire life)

hopefully she has some redeeming quality that makes up for her total lack of taste when it comes to transportation.

I'm so lucky, my wife loves old cars, almost all old cars and she is really into trucks. She won't ride in an econo can, forget ever owning one. I have a old GMC short bed step side that is project 3 waiting in the wings and she has already claimed it as hers. She wants it black with real flames. God, I love that woman.

In my humble opinion, the classic redneck car of all time is a Camaro. Whenever you see somebody living in a trailer and driving a brand new car, it's almost always a Camaro.

An El Camino, on the other hand, is a very early form of SUV, and as such, must be viewed as a vehicle for progressive, enlightened, forward-thinking people.

Some of us are not rednecks but drive El Caminos and enjoy Foxworthy and friends, and Earl. We have 4 cars too, none on blocks at the moment. Just tell people that you drive the predecessor to the SSR.

My wife drove the El Camino once in '01 and the combination of power and manual drum brakes scared her. Last July when I had emergency appendix surgery she had to drive it home from the hospital, now with discs, and she said it was fun. Gotta hide the extra keys now.

We have 7 and all are licensed drivable Chevys. The El Camino is one of the wife's cars that she bugged me about getting until I gave in. I didn't need anymore cars about 4 cars ago but they seem to appear. Have fingers crossed that the kids stay moved out and don't bring anymore around here.

Oh boy, guess I'm a redneck, my dad has his '68 Camaro SS willed to me.

I've never associated a redneck with a Camaro. Is that because it's all too common in the white trash neighborhoods to see some dude with a mullet, listening to some early 80's AC/DC, driving an '85 Iroc? Is that a redneck?

Given the choice, I'd rather be a redneck in a beat up El Camino than a yuppie in a new BMW any day of the week

It baffles me to figure out why being a "redneck" is a bad thing??? The "rednecks" I know are generally independent, patriotic, well mannered people with great work-ethic... yet somehow the big-city yuppie types with bad attitudes, and no regard for anyone but themselves seem to think they are better than us small-town "rednecks".

i don't think you guys are rednecks, i think your good ol boys....

unfortunately (or maybe not, i don't know the history of, rednecks), rednecks have been portrayed as mannerless, careless, racist. when i was a kid, the big country guys, who were kind, knowledgeable, patriotic etc. were always, "good ol boys". yeah, raford came over and helped paint the barn, he's a "good ol boy". then country music kinda changed all that, and everybody wanted to be a red neck. i say, if you treat people with respect, you can call yourself what ever you want. there is a lot to be said for being a decent human being, and if that means your a, red neck, then so be it.....

Yup. See that all the time. Of course I may just be a bit more sensitive to it since I grew up in small towns with a lot less going for them economically and now live in one of the highest per capita income zip codes in Ca. (amazing how the averages can get skewed by a few basketball players and auto dealership owners).

Although to their credit most of my neighbors claim to think the El Camino is pretty cool. But you gotta wonder about people when you get a complaint letter from the homeowners association about the "engine" on your driveway. The "engine" was actually a rear IRS for my Mustang on it's shipping pallet and it had not been there *that* long.

Are we counting licenced vehicles (5) or unlicenced (30+)?

Definately a redneck...my neck is also always red from working out the yard/driveway, the original meaning of the term.

Doesn't bother me a bit!

Dont talk about those blocks, they dont leak down, and while Iam on this thought, just because Ive got a washing machine on the front porch and clothes on the line hanging across the yard to my car on blocks doesnt necessary make me a Bad Redneck. Just a good ol Southern boy at Heart!

I think the thing about rednecks is they're associated with trailer parks, women that weigh more than the truck they drive, having several makes/models of cars in the front yard on cinder blocks and having sexual relations with farm animals.......though the latter could be confused with a hillbilly.

OK ... so I guess I'm it! I have 4 cars ... 2 of them off the ground. A '69 Camaro and a '68 Chevelle. Now they are not up on blocks ... I use jack stands!

Oh ... and my daily driver is a Pickup!

I must be the ultimate redneck then. I own the following: 69 SS 396 El Camino, 69 SS Camaro, 68 SS Impala, 71 Cutlass, 70 Malibu, and I just bought a lifted 72 3/4 ton 4x4 chevy. That one alone must make me official. And yes, I have normal cars too, my 2003 Siverado and my wife's Honda CRV. Should I be embarassed?? Man, and I thought I was just a normal "suburban "homeowner.............

My wife loves my Sprint (72 GMC Sprint) When I told her back 4 + years ago I could buy a new truck to haul stuff around or an old El Camino, I explained, one would be worth 1/2 its value in 4 years the other would be worth double. It was easy for her to pick one :-)

Next year the 3rd car becomes the odd car out, will be time to replace the 95 Bonneville with something else. My wife is thinking 68-72 Corvette or 68-69 FIrebird Convertible....... she wants something smallish that she would drive and look cool in.

I do believe that in 71 or 72, GMC Literature was one of the first, if not THE first, publication to use the term "Sport Utility Vehicle" in a description for the Sprint. How 'bout that!
My wife is definately a car person... wants me to find something for her now that the Chevelle is nearing completion. She has mentioned a late 60's Lemans or Firebird, which is fine with me. I'd rather have a Poncho than anything foreign anyway. I have my eyes on a 69 Lemans or a 72 Sprint and she's OK with either.
My mother-in-law, on the other hand, is a lost cause. She referred to my 68SS the other day as an unsafe jolopy, and refuses to go for a ride in it. I may not have disk brakes (yet), but everything on this car is new, right down to the brake lines. It even smells like a new car.
Anyway, to all you El Camino and Sprint owners... Rock on!

That is correct ! One of the the 1972 full-lineup GMC brochure has a picture of a green 1972 Sprint SP. Right next to the picture, it says: "Sprint Sport/Utility Vehicle".

PS: It is amazing how often El Caminos (or Sprints) still show up in popular culture in the form of movies, TV shows, videos, etc. Current shows like "My Name is Earl" and "Crossing Jordan" have the main characters driving El Caminos. And just yesterday I saw a new music video by "Beck" where he drives a 1972 "SS" El Camino.

He, He!!

I can talk to a lot of different people, (high brow/low brow), about whatever!

But when it gets down to what I have done in the past to make a living AND my '67 SS/RS Camaro I bought new that now has my 496 in it, guys just stop talking AND listen!!

Red-neck, white trash, yuppie, RICH whatever.........

I get the funny feeling that as they hear me talk, THEY realize I did what they didn't have to do AND that I was smart enough to STILL hang onto the car they wished they woulda bought OR wish they were old enough to have been able to buy new!!

Redneck? Hick? I hear that all the time. Go figure :)

I'm down to 4 cars now, after high school I started trimming down the stock from 9 cars. Was told no more cars one day, so I had to do the 2 for 1 trade in to get another one. Was down to 3 chevelles at one time, but sadly, I'm down to 2 now. Still have the '67 Ford 4x4, but it needs a full rebuild. Maybe after the '67 Chevelle SS.

Guilty!!!!!!!!!

I have seven cars and I drive an El Camino to work every day!

I don't care, I love my old cars and I get more thumbs up than people do in new cars! Today on the way home a young boy riding shotgun with his dad in a Ford truck could not stop staring at me as I passed them by. I guess he doesn't get to see many flamed 67 El Caminos running around.
