: How to FIND factory spot welds?

This one keeps bugging me. So far I have not found a good way to find the factory spot welds. Luckily the panels I have been working on have been OK to bend/trash ... so I just cut and bend until I find it, and then grind it out.

Now I'm looking to finish up my floor pans, and want to lift the rocker panel to fit the pan underneath. My rockers are really good, so I just want to cut out the spot weld .. and then fill it back in. And, don't want to destroy anything.

What is a good technique for actually locating the spot weld? And, does NAPA or anything local sell a decent spot weld cutter?

Thanks, Neal

I run a wire wheel over the area, that highlights a lot of them. Then you just gotta find them.

The wire wheel, or sandpaper work well to find the spotwelds. They are slightly recessed,so the paint usually stays in the dimpled area. You can find a spot weld cutter at your local auto body supply house.

Good advise above, but there will also be ones that are not visible(at least there was in my case) Find and drill out the ones that are obviously visible, then slide a thin, stiff putty knife from side to side between the 2 pcs. until you find them. Worked for me. Dennis
