Hey guys/gals
I have a real problem. I didn't have bucket seats in my 68 originally and am using the cores from a Pontiac (same seats - no headrests, etc.). My problem is that I have already had the seats covered and the guy didn't know the measurements of the buttons that go in the stitching. Neither do I!!!
I looked on cars on ebay, cars in person, and a lot of the people are omitting the buttons all together. I have seen one 68 SS frame off, rotisserie restoration car on ebay in the last month that had the buttons in the correct locations, but the problem is: I DON'T KNOW THE MEASUREMENTS!!!
Could anyone do me a super-huge favor and take a tape measure on their original seats, hook it on the bead at the top of the bucket (AS WELL AS THE REAR SEAT) and measure down to the center of their button. I know it's a pain in the butt, but I would really appreciate any input/help.

Thanks in advance!
Paul

The front seat is 8" and the rear is 11-1/2". My seats are in the next room it wasn't a big deal. Maybe you could answer a question for me. What color are your window crank handles? Black or clear? My car had both. I don't know what is correct. I read your reply to me after I first posted this back to you.

Thanks,
Scott

Mine were clear however I suspect that it is dependent upon the color of the interior. I'm not that much into the originality thing so take that with a grain of salt.

My 68 SS w/black interior had black handles. My 68 2dr hdtop w/blue interior had clear (yellowed) handles. I bet Jack is right...it depends on interior color.

Thanks for the measurements!!! That is awesome!

If I'm not mistaken, all 68's with window cranks, had the crank handle knob color coded to the interior. My Grecian Green SS with Ash Gold interior had Ash Gold crank knobs. My Cordovan Maroon SS with Parchment Interior had Parchment crank knobs. And my Ermine White SS with black interior has black knobs. A friends 68 Grotto Blue Malibu with 772 Dark Blue interior has, you guessed it, blue crank knobs. However, as easily as these things are replaced, it's not difficult to imagine all sorts of color combos over the years. One good way to tell if your crank handles are even the right year (at least for a 68), is to inspect the sides of the plastic knob. The 68 iteration had several stair-stepped ridges or ledges (maybe four to six) perhaps 1/16 of an inch wide each. Later versions have many more ridges... I don't know how many, but if you pull your nail across the side of the knob, you will hear/feel the telltale zipping sound. Probably not much value to most, but if you are into details, there's a good one.
