: can I grind down my own distributor weights?

Has anybody done this? I only get about 12 degrees of advance from my weights and would like to get about 20. I saw a magazine article where this is what they do at a distributor shop, just take some material off the inside (?) of the weight, allowing it to swing out more. How hard is it to get right (balanced)? Thanks.

I'm guessing you have an HEI. I grind weights on those all the time since the aftermarket weights I've had for HEI's don't fit. That and the center cam plate. Don't grind too much off or the weights will swing out past the pads and get stuck there. Take your time and grind a little at a time.

Yes it is HEI. What do you do to the center cam plate?

Depends on the shape sometimes you can flip it over.

I bought a kit from summit and the weights worked fine. Kit had weights and springs.

Dave,

I have never had a problem with the Moroso or MrGasket kits. You do have to look at the parts very carefully as they will go on upside-down and will not work properly that way.

If the bushings are good on the weights you have, yes grind them to get what you want. Just take a little at a time and try them out. And as mentioned before, make sure they don't swing out past the base. I've done this on dozens of HEI's. Just take your time. One trick if you want to be precise, use super glue to stack the weights together and grind them so they match. Then use heat like a propane torch to separate them. Works great.

Good luck,

Troy.
