My buddy is letting me borrow his 20 year old mig welder. It's called an All Star, and I think he said it's made by Miller. It's 220v.

I need an Argon tank now. Where is the best place to pick one up? Airgas?

check on ebay. I bought one a couple years ago for a great deal even including shipping. Erik

northern tool has some, as well as an exchange program. FYI you will probably use argon-co2 mix. check which wire you are going to use.

So I guess for light use, would a 40lb tank be a good bet. This is going to have pretty light use. Just wondering what other size tanks people are using.

most welding shops will sell you one. it is best to buy it from the welding co you will be getting it filled at. some times they are funny on filling them if it is not theirs.

Well I just found out Tractor Supply just opened a store about 1/2 hr away. The refill prices are much cheaper than at a local Airgas. I think Airgas wanted over $40 to refill a 40 CU ft tank, whereas TSC was only $18. Tanks prices are about the same both places.

Remember that tanks are rented from the gas supplier and should not be sold to anyone else. That's in Canada and I don't know about the US.

I own mine but you can buy them or rent them around here.
It's much cheaper to buy in the long run however you have to watch when you take an empty back for exchange if you exchange it rather than leave your's to be refilled, some companies like to play games and switch from "your tank" to "our tank". :(

Same deal when you buy a tank from some place you don't know, you just may not be able to get it refilled anywhere once it goes empty.
Best to buy one from a local welding supply house, that way you know you can get it refilled.

Another thing is to be sure and keep your proof of ownership, you may need it.

I've had to throw away a few good tanks because either I could not prove they were mine or could not find out who they actually belonged too.
I inherited a few when my cousin passed away only to find out later I only inherited the gas, not the tanks. :(

Also there is a certification for *fit for use*. It is certified every ten years. Most companies that fill the bottles wont fill it if the cert is out of date. The certified date is on the bottle or the ring at the bottle neck.

Im in good with my welding supplier , so its a freebie. Other companies might charge you extra.

Also make sure you have a safety cap. safety first..

Look into a "99 year lease" for the bottle.I did this for my Argon bottle at Airgas years ago.For all intents and purposes, you essentially 'own' the bottle, but if the valve, etc. goes bad,it's on them, not you, as would be the case with ownership.
This also allows you to swap your empty for a full bottle at Airgas.

Picked up a tank at AirGas. I like how they quote me a cheaper price and when I get there "oh, I was busy and was sorta guessing the prices" It ended up costing $160 out the door for a 40 cft tank
