Dave,

I've never sand blasted before. Will sand/media blasting remove the surface rust completely? I'm using a Roloc disk with the coarse pad - it's working but very slow going. If there is a better way, I'm all for that. How much of a mess will sand blasting make? Is that something that can be done in the garage? What type of equipment would I need (compressor, water trap for compressor, nozzle, etc.)?

Thanks,
Todd

Sand blasting will remove all the rust, but you cannot get to the inside of frame. Dipping it would be the best, but expensive.

Blasting will make a mess from hell. If you do it in your garage then make sure you cover everything up. You will get sand into places you didn't think existed.

You will need a good compressor. It will never shut off. Blasters use a lot of air. Definately a water trap. You don't want the media getting wet/damp. It will keep clogging your nozzle.

Home depot sells silica sand at 40 or 30 course. Works great, that is what I use. Smells funny. Fairly cheap for 100 lb bag. 8 bucks I think it was.

Marty,
Your taking a huge health risk blasting with silca sand. If you read the bag it will specifically say NOT TO BE USED FOR SANDBLASTING.
Silica sand is easily inhaled when reduced to a fine dust by blasting. There are no respirators, short of a fresh air respirator, that can completely protect you. When Silica is inhaled it can produce cancer-like changes in you lungs called silacosis. Spring for a safer blasting media. IT'S JUST YOUR HEALTH!!!!!

Trooper, You are a real trooper. Thanks for the warning. Glad I only used a little of it. That'll teach me to read labels. Just went to read the label and man alive that is exactly what it said. I read about that stuff on a post back a while ago. Wish I could remember who that was. He needs to be warned about it too.

Need to get some safer stuff. I feel like a total dummy.

Thanks again.

I've been using something called green diamond. I got it from a local blasting supply place and it seems to work pretty good. Like everyone else has said, stay away from silica!
Good Luck, and stay healthy!

If you live near a half way decent size town, there's bound to be a place that sand blasts for industry. I took my frame down to them and had them do it for me.

It was a very reasonable cost, not messy for me, and looked great when done. I have pics!

True you can't get into all places, but you can reach most with effort, and spray protective coating as far as you can into the places where a brush can't get.

I did the same thing Steve did and took my frame into a media blaster place to have it done. That way I didn't have to screw around with the mess and I had them paint it for me as well. Came out great.

im looking at getting my frame sandblasted also. if anyone has an estimate on cost that would be great. you can just post it or e-mail me if you like.

Also, what kind of preperations do i have to do on the frame before sending it in to a shop for sandblasting?

Baking soda or ground up walnut shells work very well believe it or not.

From experience, soda blasting ( baking soda ) will NOT remove rust. On a frame, sandblsting, IMHO, is the only way to go.

If you want to d this right send the frame to redi-coat in MI. They can strip and e-coat the frame and any other parts.
