Where can I get a drivers side door latch for a 66 chevelle?

Good Luck.. I had to go to a junk yard to find one for my 70 Chevelle. I think National Parts Depot has them for a 67. Not sure if they will fit a 66 or not.

What's wrong with yours? I've fixed mine before - maybe we could help.

When you fixed yours what was wrong? My 66 also has a latch problem on the drivers side. Upon inspection I found the internal spring had broken, can it be replaced? OPG has replacement latches but their about $100.00 each.

My spring is broken, the latch itself just flopps. If you shut the door real easy sometimes it will latch, if you slam it it never latches.

Yup, sounds like the same problem I had with my 64.

On mine, the problem was a broken spring on the little "tang" that drops down into the actual latch plate that holds the door to the striker on the door jamb.

The spring was the little wire kind. Without it forcing the tang into the notch on the latchplate, it was hit or miss as to whether the door would latch. Replacement of the spring did not appear possible without some serious skills.

My fix was to put a little piece of vacuum hose into the latch assembly so that it applied constant downward pressure onto the tang. It worked great and I had no further problems.

If you pull the latch assembly out of the door and study its operation, you'll probably be able to see what I'm talking about. Look at the latchplate and how it rotates over the striker as it closes. Then look for the little tang that drops down into the plate as it rotates. That's where you'll probably find the broken spring. Hopefully yours will also be set up so that you can use the hose trick.

Hope this helps.

I believe that the front door latches are all the same in 66. That spring failure is not uncommon. It is a tensioning spring. Even in the 60's and 70's that part was not serviced separately. Have several spare left and right latches for Elcaminos, should be the same. We also have a salvage yard up here that specializes in our Velles. They advertise a lot in Hemmings. Let me know if I can help. Karl
