Is there any info on the latest possible build date of an L-78 car? Also, were these cars specific to one plant or could they have been built at any plant? thanks for the info.

First off, what year??...68-69 carried over year to year so having one dated in Aug is no big deal..70 the L-78 was available until about Mid Dec ...I think, then the LS-6 took over as the big dog. They were built at all plants..not sure about Canada though.

My guess would be October or November of 1969. I believe the early LS6's started around late November or early December. Certainly stand to be corrected on my assumptions.

I believe there are documented 1970 L78's sometime into December of 69. Not sure about which plants this applies to. mr70, where are you? :)

No Canadian-built L-78s or LS-6s. Some were imported though. Sorry, actually there were likely some L-78s built in 1965 on Canadian full-sized Chevies & Pontiacs (L-72s in '66 as well for those same car lines). No solid-lifter big blocks after '66 were assembled into Canadian-built cars.

My car is documented and it was built the 1st week of december and I know of at least one other one that was built 1919 units after mine and there maybe more, so I'm guessing they were built into the 2nd week of december.
All of the later ones built came from the Baltimore plant.

Hi,

The last L78 Chevelle produced to date with docs is a car bulit 12-8-69 at Baltimore. The first LS6 that has documentation and is irrefutable is 12-9-69, also a Baltimore car. All of the research to date points in the direction that Baltimore, most likely because of it being the largest "A" body plant, as well as closest to Tonawanda finished out the run of L78's and it appears based on what is currently known started LS6 production. From about mid Nov. all L78's seen with buildsheets have been Baltimore cars, and NOONE has produced a bulidsheet from an earlier LS6 than 12-9. The 12-9 LS6 is actually a "pilot car" and was also a zone car, being used by the Boston area Chevrolet Service Zone Rep. I used to own the LS6, and it currently resides on the left coast. Another interesting tidbit of info. is all the of the last L78's (from about 11D to 12A) seem to have "dual RPO codes"..having both the RPO codes for SS396 (Z25)AND SS454 (Z15) options, but clearly having L78's installed. The 12-8 L78 though has only the "SS396" (Z25) RPO.
