I just wrapped my 69 in vinyl 2 weeks ago. Turned out pretty good. It was my first top installation.
The first thing I did was to prefit the chrome trim strips (including dilling holes for the rear corner trim pieces and the pieces that fit to the back windows) I then outlined these chrome pieces in pencil, then removed the chrome. This shows
you where the borders of the vinyl must be.
I had the glass out of the car, and the chrome removed from the roof driprails. I then masked off everything except the roof, to keep adhesive off the rest of the car. I then laid the vinyl on the car and left it there a few days, which helps smooth out the wrinkles. During this time, I shifted the vinyl around to "center" it front and back, left and right. After finding the center position, I made magic marker hash marks on the underside of the vinyl, and corresponding marks on the roof, at all 4 corners. I did this
to give me a reference
point, to keep track of the vinyl's positioning as it is glued down.
I used 3M Super Trim Adhesive for the job. (Get 3 cans of this stuff, as you'll need to apply at least 3 coats of it to the underside of the vinyl, and also to the roof.) I then folded half of the roof over on itself on the left side, and glued down the right side first, working out air bubbles as I went. This adhesive is forgiving, and you can peel the vinyl back off and restick if you stick it wrong the first time. You have at least a half hour working time, and probably much more.
Are you thoroughly confused yet? Don't hesitate to ask questions.
