What kind do you guys use. The manual says use a good air compressor oil then it says you can also use a heavy duty motor oil like castrol 30W.
My compressor is a single stage upright, 6.5hp 240 volt/ 60gal./150 psi. It holds 16oz of oil.
I would like to use a synthetic oil year round. Would like some opinions on what has worked for you. Thanks.

The guy at a shop that repairs told me to use Amsoil synthetic compressor oil. He went on to explain in cold weather starting these things burns up the motor. I know my old one would trip the breaker in cold weather. The other option would be Mobil 1 for cold starts.

I was told any motor oil is a no-no, the detergents in it will "shorten compressor life". If Amsoil makes a compressor oil that would probably be the way to go.

Dave, Im confused by your post. Do you mean the motor will burn up in the cold with use of synthitic oil or the cold will burn up the motor with any oil.

The electric motor if too high of amp draw occurs will burn up. When a air compressor starts the amp draw on a 20amp circuit can spike up to 30 amps. Amsoil does make a compressor oil and it was like $8.00 a qt. This is what I run and have no problems with cold weather starts.
