: Anyone just watch the new Monster Garage?
Moloko Oct 10th, 05, 10:11 PM Was great. They made a 500hp drag VW bug. Turbo, Demon carb, slicks, wheelie bars. Drove it on the street and got pulled over by a cop haha. Ended up running 10.5 in the quarter on his 4th pass.
Jesse - "I'll tell you right now... this isnt registered".
Cardiac Oct 10th, 05, 10:42 PM There's a guy around here with a blown SB in a 69 VW Bug !
It was recently in Car Craft or Hot Rod magazine ?
It has a US Flag paint job.
It now runs mid 9's
Slowpoke70 Oct 10th, 05, 11:47 PM Jesse - "I'll tell you right now... this isnt registered".
Why not? Last I checked he lives in California. All he needs is money and a valid title to register it. No smog, no safety inspection. Of course, he does need ALL of his lights to be in working order, including license plate light, or he'll get pulled over. That's about it.
I love how TV writers "spice" things up.
Cameano Oct 11th, 05, 2:54 AM Problem is, Enrique, it's a drag car. No lights in the 'glass front end. ;)

notstock71 Oct 11th, 05, 8:17 AM Cited for no insurance, no registration, what was the third one?
I thought they said it was 200 hp with the turbo. They were comparing 200 hp in a 1300 lb car to a 700 hp Chevy in a 3400 lb car.
The engine alone was worth $15k
proform Oct 11th, 05, 9:05 AM Cited for no insurance, no registration, what was the third one?
No Plates
MedicTed Oct 11th, 05, 10:22 AM The car was followed on a VW board I also read. One of the members found the car and Jesse James bought it from him for the show. One of the stipulations of the sale was that it not be hacked all to pieces. Here are some pics of the car when it was found.

Jesse - "I'll tell you right now... this isn’t registered"
Actually it was a 200hp VW motor
3rd pass - they didn't show 4th pass
Does Calif have a cut off year for emission exemptions for registeration?
chadh5 Oct 11th, 05, 11:12 AM I like how Swag says " this must be the only cop anywhere that hasn't heard of monster garage" or something like that. :)
Derek69SS Oct 11th, 05, 11:33 AM Too bad that arrogant punk didn't give him a reason to pull out the taser and light him up... That would be good TV :D

Coulda sworn they said 500hp at the end of the episode. 500hp and 1500lbs.

That'll be the Pay-Per-View part next season...
003LAT Oct 11th, 05, 12:02 PM It was 500 HP.. this from the Monster Garage site... "Jesse set his sights on rescuing a rare 1951 split-window ragtop — a rusted and incomplete shell, really, left to rot in a swamp — and turning it into a 9-second quarter-mile dragster powered by a 500-horsepower turbocharged engine."

Okay so the seller stipulated the car not be hacked to pieces.
Because it was so mint ?
Anyway it is much cooler now than it was when the show started.
I'm starting to want a Bug of my own now, but it needs to be one of the cool ones before the big ugly bumpers.
I thought it was one of the best episodes in a long time.

I dont know why they where worried about hacking it up,anything the did to it would have been a improvment. It was rotting away anyway.
Slowpoke70 Oct 11th, 05, 4:51 PM Aha, no lights. Jesse just isn't too bright then. He should've added fake lights for street driving.
On a side not, NO smog-era car in california is "exempt" from being emission controlled (as in, all stock emissions control equipment MUST be on the vehicle OR be replaced by a part with a CARB number.) BUT, pre-1975 cars are exempt from being tested.
blu66velle Oct 11th, 05, 7:18 PM i dont think a 51 beetle started out with any smog equipt.
Cardiac Oct 11th, 05, 7:36 PM It was 500 HP.. this from the Monster Garage site...
I watched the show after reading this thread. That being said, I keyed in on the HP figures, especially when I discovered they were using a VW engine. On the show they were shooting for 200HP (w/turbo) and repeated those figures a few more times through out the show.
Their web site (http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/monstergarage/episode/season4/episode_65.html) does say 500hp. It's funny how they twist their story like a politician right before an election.
Also, they compared their VW set up of 200hp/1300lb car to a 700 hp motor in a 3400 lb car.
Will a 200hp engine propel a 1300lb car down the quarter mile in 10.5 sec?
. . . hacked all to pieces. as if the guy was really concerend about the future of the leach infested VW to start with
Alwhite00 Oct 11th, 05, 8:33 PM Jesse said later - This is the fitst ticket I got...........tonight. lol

MedicTed Oct 12th, 05, 9:00 AM Jesse is also an ACVW (Air Cooled VW) fan. The seller rescued the car from the swamp where it was rusting. There are a limited supply of split window VWs and his concern was that it not be hacked all apart and Jesse agreed. Just because a previous owner did not appreciate the vehicle does not mean that the seller or Jesse do not. Please keep the flames to a low boil. :D
Alwhite00 Oct 12th, 05, 12:17 PM And he only had to pay $3,500 for that gem. LOL
