: Dual Action sander&5hp
MonteMan454 Apr 17th, 01, 9:03 PM Hello Fellas,
I just bought a 5hp single stage 20 gallon
Sears Craftsman Compressor. I was looking up
some stats for a dual action sander and it recommends a dual stage 5hp for "continous" use. Can I still assume that I can still use a DA sander if I use it "intermittently" I am not sure about the intermission time yet. How will my compressor affect the DA sander?
On the subject of DA sanding from previous posts I heard the 8inch is best (because of less chance of overheating, more coverage). The downside is it easy to warp the metal and damage the car's lines from overheating if you are not careful. Is it a tough thing to learn to strip a car properly with a DA sander?
Thanks for the info on this artform called bodywork,
chevymad Apr 17th, 01, 9:28 PM I have a 5hp 33 gallon craftsman compressor and it runs the DA fine but itll run continuously. U may want to stop at times and let the compressor cool off. They arent the heaviest duty rigs, but hey mines lasted 6 years now if it went out tomorrow it would be worth it.

Redrum Apr 17th, 01, 9:34 PM The 5 HP compressor will run a DA sander for a very short time. Your compressor will be running all the time so it is not recommended. I have a 30 gallon Campbell Hausfeld and even sandblast with it but, I plan on slow work and intermittent use only. I can blast about 5 minutes maximum then break for 5 to 10 minutes. Your tank is even smaller than mine so you will have less time than I do for run time.

garyB Apr 18th, 01, 9:19 AM I use my 20gal 5hp Craftsman compressor to sandblast, etc. Once I sandblasted an entire two storie house and a double two car garage in July using a siphon blaster. Yes it runs continually. So to keep it kool I set up a box fan to blow on the compressor. Thats the only way I can keep it from overheating. 230 volt motor. Had the thing for eleven years and it keeps on working!

Big James 4XL Apr 18th, 01, 12:40 PM I went with a Makita 5" electric DA with good results. I have a 5hp/27gal Coleman compressor and I think it would run a DA but as I said, the Makita works fine. Also the Makita is for velcro type sanding disc and has a dust collector.

red2rider Apr 18th, 01, 5:27 PM Take intermittant breaks and the 5hp will work just fine. 7in DA that will use the stik it pads is what you want. Also when stripping a car be prepared for alot of dust and paper use. If your going to strip a car, lay the stripper to it real heavy and let it set up for a week or until it dries. The paint will peel up like corn flakes. Then hit with your DA and 80 grit paper and you'll strip it in no time. Also heat and acrylic enamel will gum that paper up real quick. I never use the grinding portion of the DA to strip a car. You'll only do more body damage.
gearheads78 Apr 18th, 01, 7:51 PM The HP does not matter as much as the CFM.
Is yours a diaphram type or a electric motor with a belt that drives a pair of pistons?
I made the mistake of getting the diapham type 5HP Craftsman and I hate it. I have to stop all the time if using DA or Grinder
and it is always running. The worst part is it is extremely noisy. If this is the one you bought take it back if you still can and go somewhere else.

MonteMan454 Apr 19th, 01, 7:33 AM I have to look at the compressor stats but my manual is the wrong one.
As per my other post I am thinking of upgrading but I will have to investigate the
stage 2 stats. I will post the results and hopefully can give some advice.
Thanks
MonteMan454 Apr 19th, 01, 7:40 AM Greg,
The Air compressor is really gonna help Steve and I when we tear down the '69, get the '68 road ready and finally get the Monte going. And anytime you need it come by.

Delanson72 Apr 19th, 01, 11:23 AM Until last week i never really put my 5.5 hp 30 gal oil less Craftsman (it has a DeVilbiss label on it)to any real test. My folks chimmney came down in the snow storm and i used it and the $15 Camp Haus impact hammer to break up the blocks. I used it for 2 hours at about 85% duty cycle I tired out before it did, it is noisy, I had it 200 feet away. I am satisfied it would handle any job I could find for it.
