I'm having my '72 painted Mulsanne Blue with white SS stripes on a cowl induction hood. I realize the stripes go over the flapper door, but what about the cage? I was told the cage should be painted body color (blue), without the stripes. Someone else said paint the cage just like the door (basically white with blue down the center), but make the area viewed from the sides (small, pie-shaped area) blue. Any input? Thanks in advance.

I've seen it done both ways.
But i believe that the unpainted cage is the original way.
edit:
I mean that the cage should be body color.

My 70 is white with black stripes. When I got the car, the flapper door grille was painted black to match the stripes, which I believe is correct. Later I painted the white in to define the stripes continuing over the flapper grille. It certainly looks nice and adds a little detail to the hood.

Thanks, guys. You'd think that in the last 6 months that my car has been at the body shop I would've thought to investigate this! Pictures I've found seem to show that a car with black stripes kept the cage black; and a car with white stripes kept the cage body-color. My car will be Mulsanne Blue with white stripes, so I'm going to go for the body colored cage. The nice thing is that I can always pop the cage back out and change it if it isn't right. I'm not a concourse resto guy, but I generally try to keep stuff like this right. Last night I got the best Christmas present - my painter called me and said "Your car is blue". Finally. A little wet sanding, some more color, stripes, clearcoat, and buff, and I get her back - maybe in a week. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif Thanks for your help, and Happy Holidays!

Hobart, I see you are in the Chicagoland area. If you don't mind me asking who did you take your car to get done?
I ended up taking my 72 Sprint to American Auto Restorations in Lockport.

Brian, my painter is doing it on the side out of his home garage. Hoping to see it Saturday. How did you like American's work? I haven't heard anything about their work, but I see their ads alot.

Hobart, My Sprint is still being worked on by American Auto. They just are starting on the 1/4's and they said I should have it back mid Jan. Man I hope so..
I have a friend that got his 69 H/O done by them and it turned out great.
I was just wondering who was doing yours as there is not a lot of good places around that an average guy could afford.
Thanks and good luck with your 72.
