What is involved in removing the inside door handles on a 65 Chevelle, in order to remove the door panels? Need to replace the window felt and it appears the door panels should be removed. Thanks

Yes, you must remove the panel to replace the felts. You need a special tool to remove the clip behind the handles. The tool is available at most all parts stores. There are two styles. One is shaped similar to pliars, the other is a flat piece of metal with appropriate cut-outs. The second one is easiest to use.

Beware of those who tell you that you can remove the clips with a screwdriver. Yes, it can be done, but the risk of tearing the trim panel is extremely high. Don't risk it.

Do I need to remove the door panels to be able to lower the window more than normal in order to get to the felts more readily? Any tricks you could offer to a novice?

The answer to your first question is YES.

Pull the panel and check out the mechanisms so you can learn the basics first. Then we can talk about "tricks". You gotta know the basics first.

Once you get the handles and the door panels off roll the window up and down a few times to see how it works. Might as well grease the tracks while your there. You need to lower the two bottom stops to allow your window to go down farther to access your felt screws. One in the front and one in the back. Loosen the bolts and slip them down to the bottom of the slot. Roll your window down farther now and change your felts. Put the stops back where they were and put the door panel back on.
