Well my trusty no name POS mig has given it up after about 15 years of abuse, and its time to get a nicer machine. Gotta stick to 110v for portability. I have read a lot of topics and prev info, but now some newer machines are coming out. I am looking at a lincoln sp 135 plus, seems like it will do what I want but want to make sure. It is listed to work with as light as 24 guage sheetmetal, is that low enough? What guage are quarter panels, trunk patches, etc? I just dont want to spend the cash to be fighting against blowing holes in stuff. Is 24 guage ok for a lowest setting? I will be using the shielding gas and solid core wire.

I've welded 22 gauge with my cheap Craftsman 110 mig unit using both flux core and gas, and 22 is much thinner than any body panels I've come across.

I couldn't tell you the lowest "gauge setting" on my welder though.

I'd say that 24 is definitely low enough.

Does anyone know what guage sheetmetal that major parts are stamped out of? Fenders, quarters, etc.?

22 gauge I think.
