I don't have any pic's of the stamp yet, but heres my question. My stamp reads - T1215EDH 6K137380 which is right for the car and POP, the Towanda stamping is perfect, in line nice and even etc, however the vin part of the stamping is not, crooked some overlapping of #'s its actually bad enough that if you thought someone was trying to fake they would have taken the time to do a better job. I can follow the complete history of this car with the paperwork that came with the sale and don't see any indications that this isn't the original motor.I was told by a couple of different people (not from this site) that they have seen instances where the vin isn't so perfect on the deck and it was because the plant stamp and vin stamp weren't necessarily done by the same person or at the same time, that the motors were stamped before it was assigned to a car. Is this the case?

The EDH stamp was done at the Tonowanda engine plant and the partial VIN was done at the Kansas City assembly plant. Ganged stamps were not yet in use at the vehicle assembly plant, so the characters were stamped one at a time and will not be uniform in depth or straightness. The motor and transmission were stamped at the same time after installation in the chassis, but prior to body drop, I think.

Not much to add, except to say, based on your description.. It sounds Perfectly Normal for a KANSAS Stamp. I say this b/c I have many examples of deck stamps from each assembly plant for 1966 Chevelles, and Kansas is by far the sloppiest stamping of all of them and quite unique. I always say the Kansas Stamps look like they were done by a Kid or a Drunk :) The ATLANTA stamps were very different, as were the Fremont.. and well.. all of them have their own uniqueness.
As was said, the Block was stamped at Tonawanda Assembly in NY, the pad left unpainted as it awaited the final VIN stamping at the Assembly plant when Engine met up with body. Tonawanda stamp should always look more or less the same in appearance, but the final stamp at assembly is always going to be different based on plant. One still has to be careful, many very good restampings going on, so it always pays to question first and have something looked at by those who know what they are supposed to look like and have seen many examples for comparison.
