: primer problems
patdahat Jun 20th, 01, 6:39 PM i just primered my 72 velle with dupont poly and had no trouble with the results on any part where i was sparay perfectly level with panel. but hood roof had alot of granular residue left over. looked like reaaly bad orange peel. could this be due to not enough harderner ,to close with gun , or just bad gun. sanded it down with 220 grit and most of it came down. but some small areas sill a liitle rough. didnt wanna use anything harder than that.better resukts wiht a wet sand... i dont know a liitle help please

normie Jun 20th, 01, 7:19 PM Are you sure you weren't "Dry Spraying"? Meaning very little paint in the gun and holding where AIR could shoot out, creating a drying of the paint as it hits the surface? I did this a couple of times when my gun was near empty.. The paint somewhat dries while leaving the gun and balls up into what looks and feels like heavy overspray.. Which leads me to my next point.. Were you spraying slow enough where overspray isn't hitting a "Wet Edge" creating the heavy dust like appearance you are talking about?? There are more seasoned painters who will reply but these are some things to think about.. Also remember paint has a pot life (meaning of time after mixing) from 30 minutes to an hour or so.. it then starts to gel up and solidify. Good Luck!
MARTINSR Jun 20th, 01, 7:48 PM Normie said it all, one cause may be the air hole is plugged up on the cap of your gun.
Also I noticed your comment "not enough hardener", if you are mixing correctly then you had enough, if you are not mixing correctly, DO IT!
Dupont probably spent over a $million dollars formulating the product. Don't become a "junior Chemist" and come up with a new mixing ratio http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif.

Jimmy P Jun 20th, 01, 7:53 PM The above posts are correct. DA with 180 until smooth and put another coat on AFTER you have the gun working good in a horizontal working position. Make sure the vent isn't blocked. Mix per directions and lay a nice wet even coat on that roof!

Make sure your adding the right amount of reducer. Too thick can cause this big time.

normie Jun 21st, 01, 9:33 AM Well I would Sand with 400 grit, Mix Properly http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif , and reshoot at least one or two more medium coats to be safe.. But thats just me.. Good Luck..
WayneK Jun 22nd, 01, 5:27 AM The cost of material is so high any more
you can't waste money by improper mixing.
AKA " JR. CHEMIST" at you local body supply house for cheap you can get plastic mixing containers in pints up to 5 qt's. they are clear and have a number of you favorite mixing ratios scales on the side ( if a dumb
Dutchman like my self can read it so can everybody) I tend to use a stainless mixing
ruler that has a number of common ratios
etched on it.

MARTINSR Jun 22nd, 01, 7:15 AM These modern urethane products need near EXACT mixing to work properly. The low VOC products in particular. Don't "guess", don't get it "good enough" don't use a reducer or hardener that is not recommended my the manufacture. Do it RIGHT BY THE BOOK and you will have far fewer problems. At least when you mix it right and things don't go the way they should, you know that it is YOUR problem, and can look into that. If you mix like "Milton the Monster" how do you know where to start when you have a problem?
Get a good understanding of what "parts" means, they are equal parts.
3-1-1 could be 3 tablespoons primer to 1 tablespoon reducer to 1 tablespoon hardener. Or it could be 3 55 gallon drums of primer to 1 55 gallon drum of reducer to 1 55 gallon drum of hardener (can you imagine what that would cost! :eek http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
EQUAL parts.
Wayne, the mixing stick with the numbers is my choice. Just remember NOT to use it in a container that is not straight sided! If the container has a larger top than the bottom, your amounts will be off. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
