: OK all u guys who have been around chevelles for decades, what might my car run?
Rick T Sep 29th, 05, 2:00 PM i got a 68 chevelle 2 door
-factory 307 with powerglide
-now has 396 with TH 400
-396 came stock with 360 horse
-i'd say im putting out 375 now
-holley 750 dp
-edelbrock performer rpm
-10.25:1 compression
-HEI
-dynomax long tube headers
-2 1/2 inch exhaust
-flowmasters
-3.08 rear end, 10 bolt, open
-wide rear tires which should kinda help, (p295-50-r15's)
what do u think i can run on the 1/4 mile? i was thinking like a 13.9, and if i open up the headers and put 10 % nitro-propane in my fuel like a 13.4,
what do you guys think?
thanks,
Ricky Taylor
Chirp08 Sep 29th, 05, 2:11 PM Me Ricky (above) and a friend Clark are like best friends and constantly hang out and help each other with our cars, helps that we live near each other. As you can guess there is some competition between us all ;) Clark drives a 1990 iroc-z that has run a low 14 in the 1/4 (with slip to prove), and both me and Ricky's car will eat it up whenever we mess around on back roads. So 13's have to be in the bag right?
J70Chev Sep 29th, 05, 2:23 PM I'm sayin low 14's high 13's, the rear end is what's gonna kill your 1/4 mile performance, throw in some 3.73s and you should be a solid mid-low 13 second ride.
mr 4 speed Sep 29th, 05, 2:29 PM A friend of mine ran a 14.24/94 MPH with a basically stock 396 w/headers,TH350 2500 stall,and 3.08 gears.Had a 600 cfm Holley on it too.
This was thru the exhaust on street radials (Cooper Cobra's to exact)
I was going to say high 13 until I read about your 10 bolt open rear. Now I say high 14 due to lack of traction.
66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Sep 29th, 05, 3:59 PM 15's.. yeah, definitely... definitely 15's.....I'm a good driver :D
CheZeppelinCorps Sep 29th, 05, 4:25 PM I was going to say high 13 until I read about your 10 bolt open rear. Now I say high 14 due to lack of traction.
So if I run a high 14 now with an open 10 bolt I will drop to mid 13s with a posi?
webfoot Sep 29th, 05, 4:56 PM Probalby depends on your ET and your 60'. But I doutbt you'd drop 1.5 seconds by just adding a posi unless you had a 3.2 sec 60' time.
Rick T Sep 29th, 05, 5:25 PM traction is not an issure, those 295-50-15's really bite the track, and i have my rear suspension is lifted 5 inches, so when i floor it the rear end plants down hard, so they barely spin when i take off right,
and what i forgot to mention
-my 0-60 is 6.0
CheZeppelinCorps Sep 29th, 05, 5:56 PM How did you lift the rear end?
So if I run a high 14 now with an open 10 bolt I will drop to mid 13s with a posi?
I was basing that on the fact that he was running a 10.25:1 CR big block. That 396 should be able to get himin the high 13's. But without traction???
Any healthy good CR big block should be able to blow the tire off of a 3.08 open rear. So I have to assume he will have no traction.
If your car does not have a traction issue now, then putting in a posi won't do squat for you.

??? 0-60 is 6.0 seconds??? Huh
5" or rear lift?? I gotta see that picture. Are you sure?
Chirp08 Sep 29th, 05, 7:35 PM Jim, 0-60mph in 6 seconds, whats not to understand?
Epistuff, he can roast them for blocks but with a proper launch he can hook.
Rick T Sep 29th, 05, 7:38 PM i got 5" lift, JC whitney sells 5" lift springs, and i got air shocks but the pressure is so low they might as well be stock shocks. I jack them up if im gonna have people in my backseat.
But yeah traction is not an issure in my car, when i did 0-60's i pulled off from the shoulder on the highway and with all the sand and dirt on the shoulder they only spun til i got to 7 mph,
5" lift springs do a surprisingly good job with the whole traction issue, its not like stock height when the rear only travels a couple inches and goes as far as it ever will and bounces back up off the rear, these never max out when u floor.
Jim, 0-60mph in 6 seconds, whats not to understand?
Oh,...I thought we were talking 60' times, like they give you on a timeslip. That pretty much tells you how the car is hooking and what kind of 1/4 mile it will run. I didn't know you meant 0-60PMH time.
J70Chev Sep 29th, 05, 7:42 PM Ok, I found a picture of the 5" lifted chevelle, it's actually pretty cool

My first 68 with a crane fireball cam in a fresh 396 ,m-21, and 12 bolt 3.08 rear was a consistent 13.25 car. Car was jinxed though and kept breaking parts.
Mr69 Sep 30th, 05, 1:08 AM You won't run better than a 14.6
I'm going to say more like 14.8 (if you're lucky) to a 15 flat.
Let us know
It's real easy to do worse than that !
Nate
oh and by the way, you've estimated your horsepower way higher than what it is.
You've probably got about 300 hp
You can't base your horsepower on what the engine "might" have had when it was new in the 60's ! Many perameters have changed today. Primarily the fuel we have.
p-hanny Sep 30th, 05, 1:27 AM 14`s for sure right now. If you wanted to tinker I would say a stall convertor not too much stall though 373 gearing and getting it took hook up that would get you into low 14`s maybe 13`s??? It just takes horspower (real dyno hp not exspected or assumed) to get there. 13`s usually takes 350 to 400 True hp with a 3300 lb car. Hp to weight ratio and getting that hp to the connect to the track is what racing is all about. Even then there are alot of variables that can make or break you. Case in point my first chevelle Ran high 14`s,,, sb 400 some work. All I did was took out the vega 3500 stall convertor (put in stock convertor) and changed from a 456 gear to a 373 and it picked up a second. good luck Paul.

Chirp08 Oct 1st, 05, 7:23 PM its deffinately not running that slow, our friends 350 tpi camaro has timeslips of it running 14.6 with no mods, numerous articles show gains of .3-.5 which just a proper exhaust system which was added after that initial run, so assuming the low end of things he is running about a 14.3 now. Both me and rickys car will put a car length on him in between stoplights. At 3/4 throttle ill keep pace with him jsut to mess with him than just let her rip and leave him looking at my brake lights, and Rickys car is just as fast if not faster than mine now that he is working the kinks out of hte tuning, i'd imagine he has to be running around 14.0 or lower?
ACES-70 Oct 1st, 05, 8:53 PM Take it to the track, Im sayin it wont break 14s
Chirp08 Oct 1st, 05, 8:55 PM Do you think its the gearing and traction that will be the issue? The motor has to be capable of it right?
