: Hanging '69 Rear Qtr's

Well, I've about given up on the lower rear (behind the wheel) patch I got from Year One. I've had to add 2" extensions to the bottom so that it would even reach the trunk drop offs ... I've had to reshape both front and rear so that it would reach the front and rear of the panel. And after 12hrs of working on it, I still can't make it look right!!

First question ... I'm thinking about buying a Rear Qtr Skin next. Am I going to have this trouble hanging one of those too?

Second question ... Are there any skins available that will reach the factory spot welds around the bumper area? I think this would make the job much easier for me, but most pictures don't look like they go that far.

Third question ... Do most skins at least wrap around the door jamb? I think it would easier if I didn't have to weld a seam down the middle of the outside of the car.

Sorry for the lengthy questions ... I'm really frustrated with this panel I got from Year One. Any help would be appreciated.

I installed quarter skins on my 65 chevelle recently. The 80% skins, as they are called, will not reach around the trunk so you can use the factory spot welds there. But they will overlap the door jamb by about one inch so you can make the weld there out of site. At the top of the panel, they will fold over the top and overlap there by about an inch also, (if they are like the 65 skins). In any event, there are excellent photos by 70isfine, a regular contributor to this site on how he installed 80% skins on a 69 or 70 chevelle. Search his name in this forum under the topic quarter panel. Should find his post with a link to his pictures. They will show you all you need to know about how to install. I followed his method with good success. I butt welded for the first time, and I think it is easier than lap welding, once you get the hang of it. Just make sure you have a gap the width of a thin air saw blade. If you can't find his photos, email me and I will retrieve my link to them.

The dreaded patch panels, every post I have seen regarding these is the same. I will never use one again. About the partial 1/4's, I have recently used a pair on my 69 convertible which will be different at the top due to the lack of sailpanels. They are more work than the full 1/4's for certain (although much cheaper). One major complaint is that the edges are not sharp, in other words the radius of the bend is way too large giving a rounded look where the door meets the 1/4. I had to work with it to reshape it and it is so much more effort than the full 1/4 I used on a 72. You are right about the rear bumper area, if yours is rusted there those pieces are a b**ch to fabricate. One suggestion if you must use the patch panels, look around to find some that are of heavier gauge steel. I saw some recently at a swap meet and they were heavy stuff like GM used, mine are somewhat flimsy and hard to work with sometimes.
