Has anyone here ever shaved their door handles? Anyone know where a website is showing how it was done. I'm not worried about the body work as much as I am about wiring and getting the door actuators and solenoids to work correctly. Am I an idiot for wanting this and wanting to do it?

A 72 chevelle is not a street rod. Leave it alone.

A 72 Chevelle IS a street rod if you want it to be - do it like you want. Hell if every car looked the same it would be a dull world. SHAVE EM!

I am planning on doing this to my '68 Chevy Stepside that I am currently rebuilding from the ground up. What I worry about is having an electrical glitch that prevents me from opening the door manually. What most people do is to reverse the latch and striker mechanism so that the latch is on the B-post and the striker is on the door. This has two obvious benefits...1) it allows you to add a cable for manual release that can be placed under the body, tucked behind the rocker panel. 2) It moves the added weight of the solenoid system from the end of the door. The solenoids to pop open an old car latch weigh about 2 Lbs. a piece and placing this weight at the farthest reaches from the door hinges adds additional stress to them. Switching the latch mechanism isn't necessary and it is a complicated work of metal fab, but it allows you to have a manual backup should the electronics fail.

your the on who called your self a name. leave it alone is just an opinion. 20's 30's 40's are street rod build up cars. 50's cars are hot rods. 60's and early 70's are mucle cars. Don't be offended its an opinion 64

I think you should do what you want with your car and check out Rocky's site and www.dalesplace.com (http://www.dalesplace.com) But that's just my opinion.

Thanks for the opinions guys....keep the info coming!! I see Super Chevy has an article on a 4th gen. Camaro where they shave the handles. I'm just worried about the wiring. I can handle the body work.

If you buy your "poppers" and solinods you will get the info you need. UNKL ALs has some good stuff. One way to do it is to not use solinoids at all but to use power windows. Just put a switch outside that you use to lower the window. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

I shaved the handles on my Elky. If you can do the bodywork, which is the most time consuming and difficult part of doing this, you should be able to do this yourself. The wiring is no sweat, very simple. Figuring out where/how to mount the solenoids and the door poppers, and adjusting everything to work right will take a little time, but there is nothing extremely difficult about it. I can help you through it if you decide you want to do it.
