Anybody used that 3M product for applying SS emblems and such? Good results...or bad? I'm getting my elky out of the paint shop next week and I really don't want to drill any holes when I put my new emblems on.

djw,
On my 71, one of the S's in the SS came off and I was lucky enough to find it. I could not figure out how to get at it from behind to put on new speed nuts, so I looked at just gluing it on. What I found out is that the fender is not flat at the point where the emblems go, so the 'super glue' type trim adhesive I was trying to use wouldn't hold; there just wasn't enough contact area between the emblem and the fender. I ended up using some gooy (sp?) contact type adhesive that is an ugly yellow and looks bad up close, but it's only temporary until I start the body work and repaint.

Good luck,
Bill C.

3M won't work "at all". You gotta drill the holes. you should have put the embelems on before it got painted. Or hopefully the fender wells are out so you can unbolt the bottom of the fender to get the nuts on. Its the only way. Everything else will look like crap. Bite your toung and do the work. You'll be much happier when your done.

I used 3M emblem tape & so far (2 yrs) no problem. Its thin, so may not work on a curved surface. Possibly you can get a body shop to donate some. A roll is about $25.00 and thats the only way suppliers around here would sell it.

I used it on my 70 to reatatch the "malibu" emblem on both fenders. So far no problem.

Another option, which I used, is to use little "barbed" type fasteners that fit into the hole in the fender and then the emblem "pegs" are inserted into these. You need to "oversize" the holes just a bit to accept the fasteners, but if done correctly, they look just fine. Drill the holes and do a test mount BEFORE you paint.

Maybe one of you can tell me how to get the stuff off. The paint shop glued my rear "SS 396" emblem on ( pins were too short for nuts) and now I want to swap it out with an "SS427" emblem, without screwing up the rear panel. What a PITA. I'll see what nuggets of wisdom the paint shop offers.

I would go with the "barrel nuts" that Jerry is described or bite it and go behind the fender well with speed nuts.. But its no easy task. It takes a long arm, and lots of patience. Also put alittle strip caulk on the back side to help keep everything nice & dry.

The tape may work.. but you will still need holes in the fenders..
