: Considering purchase of 72 malibu
UKWildcatsfan Sep 26th, 05, 3:55 PM Hi. I am new to Team Chevelle and was wondering if I could get some advice.
I am considering purchasing a 72 Chevelle Malibu. It is a 2 door with the vinyl top. It has the original 307 engine and the odometer only reads 81,000. According to the current owner, this is original mileage. I have looked the car over and did not find any major issues (Rust or Bondo) with the body and the frame looks to be a good shape. It starts right up and runs and drives well. The car looks to be all original with the exception of the Cragar wheels. It is priced at $7500. Is this a reasonable price? I personally feel this is a little high. Any assistance would be appreciated.
BIG EVIL CHEVELLE Sep 26th, 05, 4:08 PM That is high unless the body and under carrige are super clean. I bought my chevelle for $2500. It had 150,000 miles, but ran well and the body and interior were really decent. I'd do a little haggling on price.
Chirp08 Sep 26th, 05, 4:10 PM Well, in comparison I paid $3700.00 for an original SS 402/4-spd 72 that had very little (just a spot here or there in the common areas) rust, had new rear quarters and a fresh paint job, no interior except the dash and seats, required the complete interior kit. The engine wasn't the original instead it was a 350 with a 2-bbl on it, very dirty, gone was hte 4spd replaced with a th350, the rear suspension was upgraded a bit but nothing more and I still haven't touched the rest of the suspension besides new wheels/tires and front bearings.
So if your car is in as good of condition as you say, somewhere around $4500-$6000 based upon how "good" of a condition it is in seems about right, I got a deal of the century on mine, but that was before the muscle car prices shot through the roof as they seemed to in hte past year.
jpete Sep 26th, 05, 4:46 PM I paid $2000 for my 307/TH350 35k mile "granny car" about 8 years ago. I tried to sell it for $5000 about a year ago and didn't get any takers so unless this thing is "showroom" condition, I think $7500 is WAY WAY WAY overpriced.

71-chevelle Sep 26th, 05, 5:50 PM The guy i bought my chevelle from is selling a 72 with new quarters, new paint (a light yellow, it looks terrible) an SS dash, bucket seats, th-350, shifts on the consle, and had a 350 for 7500.00. I think its high but thats jsut me
Professor_SS Sep 26th, 05, 8:53 PM where in WV are you? Maybe one of us nearby could size the thing up for you. But like said, it would have to be pretty nice for that kind of money. But then again, my lovely bride paid more than twice what I would have for my 72, I never told her she got ripped off. And I now have more in it than I would ever tell her I have.
I'm in hagerstown, near martinsburg WV if that is close to where you are.

You are my neighbor to the north. I live in Falling Waters, WV, which is just north of Martinsburg. If you'd be willing to look at the car for me, I'd appreciate it.
Professor_SS Sep 27th, 05, 11:19 AM sure, when? I have this evening, after 4 and thursday evening off, as well as some time this weekend, depending on the length of the honey-do list and what my 18 year old manages to break between then and now.
I'll PM you with the phone number
UKWildcatsfan Sep 27th, 05, 3:49 PM Thanks to those of you that responded. You have basically confirmed what I already thought!
Professor_SS Sep 29th, 05, 10:19 PM Tom, I sent you another PM.... are you still out there?
UKWildcatsfan Sep 30th, 05, 4:26 PM Professor,
I didn't get any new messages? When did you send it?
Tony
