Ok...
A few of the boys got together today to race Commerce at the "Snap On Day at the Races".
It was the first chance I've gotten to run my car since replacing the old tranny (TH400) and convertor with new Coan products.
I had suspected for some time that the old tranny was not quite right.
Today confirmed all that.

Best run was the second of the day, as is typical of my car.
Seems to take one run to knock all the "street driven" cobwebs out of it. ;)

All incrimentals are now new bests...

R/T .020
60' 1.419
330' 4.099
1/8 6.375
MPH 107.65
1000' 8.351
1/4 10.039
mph 132.68

Remember...this beast weighs 3760 lbs with me in the seat. :(

This run just happened to be against Joespanova who built my motor and has been a mentor on getting this Chevelle to hook.
This time...I beat the teacher!! :p
Joe's Nova:
R/T -.073
60' 1.430
330' 4.139
1/8 6.418
MPH 108.44
1000' 8.398
1/4 10.071
MPH 134.52

Special kudos to Marooned (Mike Norman) and his Pro Mod buddy, Dave Himes who set me up with their contacts at Coan to spec out a new tranny & 8" convertor for my car. Seems to be DEAD on!
Special thanks to my bro-in-law DanaB who, although broke a motor mount/radiator today, also set some new personal bests with his '69 Malibu complete with a fresh 12 bolt 3.73 gearing.

Yes, GA69...Dana broke a 100mph...actually 101+ mph with a 13.16  The 383 liked the gear change.

FYI...James also set a couple of new lows to date sorting out his new combo...an Edelbrock RPM headed, UDHarold cammed 468...ran 11.20's
Truthfully, I don't know what the DA was but the weather was crappy ...mostly cloudy, mid-high 80's, quite humid and actually sprinkled a few times during the day. Influence from Rita, I guess.

Couldn't be happier for you Bill. :D

Now I gotta do something to the Red car to keep up. (I got a plan)

Got this new steroid medicine. :beers: Says it's brewed in Golden Colorado. I'd rather use the stuff Al makes, but he won't send me any.

I swapped the gears in mine today... wanna make a few passes to see how it goes down the track with a 3.90 in it.

Once again, Great job, Fun leavin with the wheels up ain't it?

Congrats Bill,
Where do you suppose the old th400 was letting you down, or do you suspect the converter. What was your previous, a 9 inch?

I am going to be purchasing a new th400 and converter (likely a 10") in about a month to replace my former Fairbanks, a casualty of my '66 being stolen. It would seem time to think about it since the majority of my 540 parts were ordered almost 2 weeks ago.

Most of the once reputable perf trans manufacturers have lost site of what made them rich, nothing but problems from every name brand that comes to mind. I don't have any experience with Coan, nor any local acquaintances using Coan, but have seen that a good many TCer's endorse them. I have to imagine they are a midwest or east coast based company as I had heard little mention of them until recently (last couple years). If you don't mind me asking, how much did it set you back? did you order direct from Coan? if so, how long for delivery?

I am going to check if they have a website, thought I'd ask, since you obviously are happy with your purchase

I like my Coan too. Prices are from around 350.00 on up. Mine was built for my application ($875.00) and took about a week to get.

I think more than just sprinkles came from Rita... cough-tailwind-cough. ;)

Man, those kinda numbers you can actually feel during the race. You just KNOW it's something good as you bang the gears. I'm glad you have gotten those results out of your car. If you ever want to sell it, just give me a call. I have home equity now... :D

New trannies are good things. After my 2ndary sprag failure, the rebuilt tranny was really crisp. I went out to the track and got back the ~.2 & .3 tenths I had lost in my 1/8th mile ET. I"m guessing yours was a 10" converter before, and you upgraded to an 8" ?

I have browsed the Coan web site since my last post. Pretty wide price and performance variance in th400 alone. I'm really curious now, as to which particular th400 version you, as well as other TCer's, are using. Myself, I was completely content with the auto/manual option and want a std shift pattern for the PRND21 version of the factory console shifter. I don't expect 24 years of uninterupted service like I got from my Fairbanks, especially since my HP will go from approx 550 to 700+/-,
but I do expect solid shifts without leaks with reasonable durability and dependability.

OK Now I REALLY want that wheels up photo to put on the back of our 2006 show shirts. ( preferably a front/pass side shot so it will be launching out of Niagara Falls!)

Thanks guys! :o

Bob...no DR test. Too lazy to do a tire swap at the track, I guess. I will try it soon, though.

FYI...the Coan 8" replaced an 8" ATI that was manufactured specifically for my car two years ago...before the cam/head swap last winter. The old fully auto TH400 was built locally. The new Coan is a reverse/manual VB.
The ATI convertor has been returned to them for freshening.
Coan cost...need to contact Marooned if interested for application specifics and additional info. Got a good deal thru Mike's buddy Dave...

Gene...yeah, I'll get you a picture ASAP. My photographer had grand-babysitting duty yesterday and missed all the fun. :(

Congrats Bill. That's a heckuva endorsement for Coan products. I can see it in the pages of our favorite car rags now:

"Customer Bill Blahblahblah says THIS about Coan products:

'I replaced my old combo with parts from Coan and picked up A HALF SECOND in the 1/4!!! In my book, Coan products are OOOOOOOTAAAAAY!!!'

Be like Bill. Be a winner. Buy Coan."

Well, it would be funnier if it was on T.V. and Bill was doing a very badly scripted job of acting.

That would be awesome, Harold. I would have never thought the car would run this quick. My goal was really a "reach" of high 10.20s
We've never even had the carb apart...stock jetting! ;) My sons Holley Dominator came with 91 or 92 jets so you might pick up some more with a little more jet. If it's lean you'll notice an dramitic increase by jetting up and maybe putting in higher flowing sleeves also or just try someones 1050 annular discharge Holley Dominator. My son has a 9375 pre H.P. model and it loads up a little when trying to drive it around but works real good at the strip. Anyhow you have already gotten a pretty good pass out of yours and there may be more left.

BillsCamino
Sep 28th, 05, 5:05 PM
Harold,
I tried the Dominator thing when I first built this motor. The 1050 did great on the dyno and well if at idle or full throttle BUT, for every day driving around town in traffic at partial throttle, it was impossible. Spit, sputtered, and stumbled no matter what we tried. For days we screwed with that carb. Nothing wrong with the carb, just couldn't get it to do well on my application.
Finally got a recommendation from a BG engineer (not a tech!) to purchase this King RS. It's worked flawless right out of the box in a 995cfm format.
I do have sleeves to bump the carb up to both a 1095 or an 1195 and plan on experimenting with this real soon...probably the next track outing.
