: clear coat bubbling
hxturbo Feb 19th, 05, 1:38 AM My clear coat is getting a bunch of little bubbles in it. Does anyone think a good color sand will takes the bubbles out. My body man did a little area with what looked like a stone and it took them out fairly well. He said he would do the whole car for about 350 bucks. Good price?????
hxturbo Feb 20th, 05, 1:22 PM Come on body guys. Help a brother Cheveller out
69ssmike Feb 20th, 05, 2:15 PM Is this a new paint job or old??? Sounds like solvent popping maybe if it's fresh. $350 sounds ok to wetsand and rub a car.
70isfine Feb 20th, 05, 2:30 PM $350 sounds ok but is it going to solve the problem? Probably not if its solvent pop.
hxturbo Feb 20th, 05, 5:04 PM Thanks for the replies guys. The paint is 10 years old.
gold00 Feb 20th, 05, 9:53 PM For those of us that do not know what is solvent pop and what is it caused by?
69ssmike Feb 21st, 05, 2:29 PM Solvent pop looks like little bubbles in the paint, usually caused by putting paint on too fast or using the wrong hardners and reducers for the tempature. It is actually drying on top while the solvents underneath are trying to escape.
MARTINSR Feb 21st, 05, 7:46 PM If this clear is 10 years old and these bubbles JUST showed up it is not solvent pop. Unfortunately about the only thing it can be is delamination.
After cutting and buffing can you still see "something" thru the clear?
hxturbo Feb 21st, 05, 10:16 PM No, the stone appeared to take the bubbles off and the paint is clean
MARTINSR Feb 21st, 05, 10:50 PM Did they just appear? Or could they have been there all along and you just didn't see them?
hxturbo Feb 22nd, 05, 8:55 PM Good question...They appeared to the naked eye just recently but maybe they were there all along.
Redmanf1 Feb 23rd, 05, 1:32 AM Another thing that I have had happen is if you put to many coats of R&M urethane clear on it will leave these little bubbles about the size of a pen head. Thousands of them, well I had to sand it down into the color to get rid of them so when it says two coats that is all I put on it. I had never used the R&M before. I tried many different paints but this was back in 89 so materials have changed a lot. Hope it works out for you.
hxturbo Feb 23rd, 05, 1:40 AM You know what Redman..I think you hit it right on the head. The car was coated with 10 (yes 10) coats of clear. I will have my body guy sand it down and reshoot it. Thank you. By the way...mines a 72 Heavy Chevy SS clone.
Redmanf1 Feb 23rd, 05, 6:28 PM Hxturbo, If you can make it slick without taking it all the way down I would. Mine happened within an hour of shooting it so there was no saving it. Some clear you can pile on and some you cannot. I have seen fiberglass show bonding and screw areas years after but most paint problems show there ugly heads within several months besides peeling. You will have to post some pic’s of your car. My Heavy has a BB in it but it is not original motor. All original sheet metal and one repaint it’s true heavy.
hxturbo Feb 23rd, 05, 10:36 PM Redman...I hope this works.

hxturbo Feb 24th, 05, 8:10 PM Thanks...I really want to paint it your color. I have a model sitting right above me of a 72 that is Mulsanne Blue. I love that color/combo
Redmanf1 Feb 25th, 05, 5:04 AM I like the blue a lot and the pic does not do the paint justice on the heavy. I want to change the color of the conv but I hate to do that. It needs paint but the interior is in great shape. It is what I call a 10 footer @ that point you do not see the lacquer check or crows feet it has in places. If I paint I want to change the color but hate to do that since it is an original car, plus I would have to change the interior. That is one hold back to having an original car it makes you think hard before doing any mods.
