I'm thinking about painting my 71' malibu solid black with grayish ghost flames coming off the front. Actually it will be something custom with that paint job, but i don't want to give away any good ideas. lol don't need any copies. Anyway....i was just wondering if anyone has a pic of a 71' with a paint job like that so i could take a look?
thanks

Is that your truck? Looks pretty cool. You wouldn't happen to have any pics of a 71' malibu, solid black, with a 4" cowl hood would you? lol Not to be too specific or anything.
Do any of you guys know of any places that could take a pic of your car, put it on the computer, and then change the colors so you could see what it would look like with certain paint jobs? Or are there really no body shops that do that? j/w

I don't have any pictures, but here's how to do it. I assume you're using a BC/CC system.
Do a test panel! Find an old hood, fender, or whatever.
Paint your black base coat. let it cure for @ < 4 hours. Tape off your flames.
here's where you have to be creative. Nobody that I know of is going to give you a recipe.
You can mix some pearl Mica into the base color. dark blue, purple, silver or even black if you can find it. Start by mixing a small amount of mica to your base coat. Write down the amounts.
Increase the amount in until it looks good.
it's easier to add more than to take it out! ;) That's the tricky part. When you add the clear coat, the mica is going to POP, so be carefull and don't add too much. Clear coats amplify metallics and pearl essence. Trial and error on the test panel will save your butt on the finished product.

Here are some great ghost flames on a '69. Should look equally fine on a '71.

Just a thought on your ghost flames. Ive never seen it done this way but think it would look good. Use a metallic black for the ghost flames. GM in the mid 90's used a metallic black on gran prix and gran am's. Nice looking color, only could the metallic in direct sunlight.
Be kinda trick walking around your car looking at it and out of NO where that metallic black catches the sun and BAMMM :D

Go to www.bellevuesign.com (http://www.bellevuesign.com) and click on "Joe's Shop Truck" to see my '72 El Camino. It's silver and the flames are cameleon blue, but it's closer than that beautiful pickup. Mine I airbrushed with acrylic auto air paint and clearcoated over it. They change color with the light.
