: 8 track tapes/8 track players
Junkyard Dawg Sep 23rd, 05, 6:32 AM How many of you feel 8 track tapes /8 track players are worth something these days? If not do you think they'll be worth something in the near future?
Me personally I don't see them as worth anything now or in the next 30 years....but who knows?
My dad seems to think all of his (which have been in the attic for years) are worth something as he actually wants me to put them on ebay. We have no use for them.
mr 4 speed Sep 23rd, 05, 6:53 AM I still got a few laying around, and I have an old 8 track/receiver combo hooked up in the garage.
Even got a Red Foxx 8 track :D
don't think they're really worth much..records on the other hand, thats a different story
Junkyard Dawg Sep 23rd, 05, 7:23 AM Yeah, my dad used to have an old Capehart AM/FM stereo with a built in 8 track deck. It was one of those table top ones. Had a chrome face/woodgrain body with a backlit dial that lit up in a deep blue when the stereo was turned on, black when off. Quite possibly the coolest thing I've ever saw.
Of course he gave it away in the early 80's and I'd like to find one just like it (since he had one and I thought it was cool) but unfortunatley I don't know the model number....I'd guess it was made early 70's...it sort of looks like my Kenwood KR-3130 receiver, if any of you know what one of those looks like.

The attic, with it's wide temperature changes, is not the place to store the tapes. Maybe not the player either. I personally don't think they'll be worth a lot but if theres a buyer out there that will pay too much try eBay.
Andy69 Sep 23rd, 05, 8:18 AM Show your dad your new iPod, and tell him you can put the equivalent of 50000000000000 8-track tapes on it, with better quality to boot, and you can take it anywhere you want. Then point out that 8-tracks went away because something better came along and no one wanted them anymore. Then sneak up to the attic when he's asleep and toss them. Problem solved.

wont that be like me showing you an import and tell ya it brakes, handles, acclerates quicker, and gets better gas mileage than your chevelle? ;)
there is something about the old 8 track player, and something about a chevelle that cant be replaced with anything new... im sure you know that.
keithb Sep 23rd, 05, 2:35 PM I still play 8 tracks in the garge when I am working on my Chevelle.

Please tell me you're not comparing my Chevelle with an 8-track tape player, pleeeeeeeeeze! :p
List them for sale here and on www.camaros.net (http://www.camaros.net/) in the Classifieds and I bet the guys with factory 8 track equipped cars will snap them up...
blown70 Sep 23rd, 05, 2:58 PM Man!!!I have seen a lot of "useless stuff" go for a lot of dollars on ebay.I don't imagine 8-tracks are any exception.Put them on,see what happens.
blu66velle Sep 23rd, 05, 3:04 PM i've been looking for an 8 track player to put in my 66 , i dont plan on hooking it up , i just think it would look cool . you dont see them in many cars anymore (working or not) . i think it would really fit in w/the look of my car because its not 100 point resto or a hi tech billett barge just a cool retro looking car that gets driven
oh yeah , the cd players in the glove box and i have a factory radio block off plate where the factory radio was so im looking for an 8 track that mounts under the dash . my uncle (class of 76') sad the hot set up back in the day was a craig or power play ?? anybody ever hear of these?
zrwhat Sep 23rd, 05, 3:11 PM If you don't think they have any value, take a look at what factory Delco 8 track players (say for a 70-72 Chevelle) are bringing, especially one with am/fm too, HOW DOES $600 BONES SOUND TO YOU? I have one in my 70 LS-6 and do use it. Admittedly, 8 tracks are hard to find now days but it sure is cool when you drive to a show or cruise night with a 8 track cartridge sticking out of you radio blasting the Doobie Brothers or Led Zepplin! I would suspect those with units for the home are getting scarse and are worth more today then they were 5 years ago, what will they be worth in 20 years?
Gibby-giving away my age and proud of it!
Xtreme70SS396 Sep 23rd, 05, 3:16 PM I know you can get a couple bucks each for a lot of those tapes. That plus shipping = cash you otherwise don't have.....
It's like the old Victrolas, etc - antiques, someone wants them eventually.
Byfield Sep 23rd, 05, 3:22 PM I've thought it would be cool to re-record some 8-tracks with the music you listen to now and then use them in the Chevelle when you cruise
Not as handy as a CD player but it would be cool from a retro stand point
ACES-70 Sep 23rd, 05, 3:31 PM I just paid $30 for an original Chevrolet demo 8 track, the one that came with the new Chevrolets in 70, if this helps any,,
Xtreme70SS396 Sep 23rd, 05, 5:37 PM Whoa, prices for those demo's went up a little. I also found one on Ebay about 5 years ago for mine.
Look at ebay, most of the regular tapes go for $2 - $5 each for the popular ones.
MadMarv Sep 23rd, 05, 5:44 PM Man this entire thread is making me kick myself in again and again. all I can think of is that hole cut into my dash for the radio. Shoulda had it put in the glovebox, why I didn't think of that..
The repro dashes are incredibly chinzy I think. Have to keep my eyes peeled for a decent old one.
The 8-track that came with my car has loose parts inside. I wonder if you could even find someone that fixes them anymore. Not like I have any 8-track tapes though. Would be cool to stick it back in the dash, but man is that thing heavy, to think in 12 or so years they'd have the sony walkman out.

OrrieG Sep 23rd, 05, 7:35 PM 8 track tapes do not have much value about .50 each because condition is iffy. Good players are worth pretty good change I just sold a Sony 8-track deck (for home stero not auto) in excellent working condition on ebay for $65 with 4 people bidding. I've sold other in that range (they have to be in good condition and working) over the last couple of years. I get them at yard sales for $5 because they have no perceived value compared to modern CD's....

It's a lot different when tied to a classic Chevelle or Camaro...
Junkyard Dawg Sep 23rd, 05, 8:23 PM Wow, haven't been here for several hours and already a tom of responses.
Ok, first off I could see where you nostalgic buffs would shell out alot of cash for a factory 8 track deck for your car....because you are trying to live in the past. :P J/k....but all jokes aside I can see why you'd do this.
Now for the tapes.....that's the question. Yeah my dad actually wanted to have me put these on ebay. Quite frankly I couldn't see them bringing much.
Why he put them in the attic is beyond me....probably didn't have the heart to throw them out (he never throws away anything he thinks is worth keeping: a packrat) and yet gave away his only tape deck....well come to think of it he did have one in his car too.
I have an Audiovox 8 track deck in real nice shape. It's a 2 shaft style and it would fit your Chevelles. :) Maybe I should sell it on ebay with the tapes??
69bu Sep 23rd, 05, 8:33 PM My grandfather had a factory 8-track is his 69 S.S. Chevelle. I have a lot of good memories of sitting in the back seat with the windows down listening to Johnny Cash Live from Folsom Prison. To this day Johnny Cash is just about the only country music I can stand.
deluxe Sep 23rd, 05, 9:02 PM I actually installed an under dash unit in my '65 to give it more of that retro feel/look. Its a mid late 60's chrome unit, the pattern on the face matches the pattern on my gauge panel. Sounds ok just sucks when 1/2 way through a song it switches tracks.
Alwhite00 Sep 23rd, 05, 9:21 PM I remember when I was little I used to tear the tapes apart for the little rubber wheels inside and make little toy cars. LOL - Parents were not too happy though. I told them I only took the ones with the rubber wheels as some of them had plastic but that did not help much.

Too much twang? What about all the older country stars?
Sgtpop Sep 23rd, 05, 11:10 PM Heck, Ive got approx. 100 8Track Tapes put up. I just dont have a player. My son goes downstairs every once in a while and pulls them out. I would like to transfer the music over from these tapes one day. A lot of good music, and many memories to boot. That was the day!
Mr69 Sep 23rd, 05, 11:32 PM I bought a garage full of tools once, where an old guy had passed away.
I noticed the large plastic flip top city garbage can was full of mint condition 8 Track tapes and asked the seller why are you throwing these away ? He said I could have them all if I wanted them and that he had more. Must have been 300+. My sta wag was litterally full of tools, and that was with the back seat folded down. I had to pass on them as I did not have room. I was literally packed with tools in every crevice of that car. And I was 1-1/2 hrs from home or I might have went back.
They sell on eBay.

"pop" you can buy stuff online from I think I've seen 59-199 (while looking at stuff for putting vinyl up) to move 8-tracks from the track to a computer. Not sure what it would run if you don't have a player. All I'm saying it can be done, and not that hard to do, just depends on what value you place the sentiment of your old 8 tracks.
I know alot of guys that "port" vinyl, but that may be biased since "turn tables" and record players are relatively easy to come by, given their renewed popularity on the club circuit. I am 100% sure the stuff for at home, non-commercial use is out there and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
good luck.
My 8 track must weigh 30lbs, not sure if I'd even want to ship it to get fixed!
matt
Sgtpop Sep 24th, 05, 12:14 AM Thanks Matt, Now that you mentioned it Ive got about 300 albums. My Sansui turn table is belt drive. I bought it back in 70. I guess I could find a belt for it to. My wife says that I am stuck in a sixties capsule. I want part with these items. They are in the basement stored. I guess when Iam gone the kids will get rid of my stuff.
OrrieG Sep 24th, 05, 11:26 PM If someones build sheet calls for a factory 8 track you can bet they would pay bug money for the right unit and that's hundreds not $65. It's a lot different when tied to a classic Chevelle or Camaro...
I never find auto units, but would grab them in a heart beat if I did, especially if they were factory.
John_Muha Sep 25th, 05, 12:05 AM 4 tracks had better separation between channels with a lot less crosstalk.
Rowdy Sep 25th, 05, 3:25 AM I had a factory '68 or '69 Delco AM/FM/8track in my '66 until well into the ninties. I spied the going price on eBay some time back and have been keeping an eye out for it. As I never throw anything out, it will eventually turn up. The last 8 track tapes that I had purchased were in the early eighties (AC/DC Back in Black, Rush Moving Pictures), they remained in use periodically, but the Vegas summer's exacted a toll, every year playing a little slower. The AM/FM still worked fine, I bet the tape player wasn't at fault nearly so much as the tapes themselves.
Chris R Sep 25th, 05, 3:56 AM I once heard that the original 8 track Smokey And The Bandit sountrack is a collectible. Im not sure if its worth that much really. Never really looked into it.
alan margosian Sep 25th, 05, 12:13 PM Yeah, well, there's nothin' like that awkward silence and loud "clack" between channels to wake you up as you were falling asleep at the wheel after a good hard night's work (especially back in those days before those highway dots were glued down). Bet your new-fangled iPod contraption cain't do THAT...
alan margosian Sep 25th, 05, 12:19 PM Lots of 8-tracks are still blowing around at garage sales and local flea markets. But, the REAL collector's piece are the 4-tracks that preceded them for only a few short months. Still have two of those tapes. Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass and The Association. Talking about obscure!!!
alan margosian Sep 25th, 05, 12:23 PM Craig was HUGE back in the day and so was Muntz. At least in the So.California circles...
79943 Sep 25th, 05, 12:41 PM I just paid $30 for an original Chevrolet demo 8 track, the one that came with the new Chevrolets in 70, if this helps any,,
what songs are on your demo? the only thing i have left from the LS6 i bought in 1970 is the demo 8 track, see pic. [the car had am radio and 8 track stereo.] my tape has on 1) "the best of broadway" - boston pops, al hirt, etc. 2) "teen scene" - four jacks and a jill, jefferson airplane (white rabbit) , etc. 3) "the sound of brass" - nashville brass, etc. 4) "a touch of the classics" boston pops again, etc. so in other words this tape didnt get much use except for white rabbit, LOL. this was in a July 1970 purchase in michigan. i am curious if there were several versions of demo's used?

Limoridr Sep 25th, 05, 2:26 PM One of my first cars was a 71 Mach 1 fastback. It had an 8 track with a microphone that I could along to my Janice Joplin over the speakers. Never seen anything like it since. Almost like a karaoke machine without the words. Then again back than, you could actually understand the words. And someone please explain this one to me: If I can sign 'almost' as good as Janis, then why does everyone at work keep telling me NOT to quit my day job? Hmmm
Ken K Sep 25th, 05, 2:35 PM The early GM factory 8 track players are worth some money. You can still buy brand new after market players on Ebay cheap. I have a bunch of tapes, some are still sealed in plastic. I know where there is a storage locker with over 5000 tapes in it. The last 8 track tapes were made in the late 80s. There is also a under ground video on 8 track collecting. If you buy some tapes from a dealer, they might make you buy a bunch of tapes and you will end up with tapes you don't want. Depends on the tapes, some are only worth about 25 cents each. The sealed rock tapes are worth the most. Elvis tapes are also collector items.
Chris/75 Sep 25th, 05, 2:38 PM 8 Tracks, wow, i remember when i was a kid in the late 70s early 80s, riding around in my dads 66 Chevelle listening to his Elvis 8 track tape, and his Doobie Brothers 8 track tapes...
Ken K Sep 25th, 05, 2:46 PM Remember those infomercials from the late 70s and early 80s? Slim Whitman and Box Car Willie. LOL. There is a few Slim Whitman tapes in one of the boxes.
bisjoe Sep 25th, 05, 2:56 PM I too have many 8-tracks in a box, but have copies of most on digitally re-mastered CD. They do sound sooo much better, and still have that old fashioned stereo sound, like maybe the singing and drums on the left speakers and guitar/base on the right. I have seen lots of players at the swap meets like the one coming up at the Monroe (WA) fairgrounds in
October. Add on ones are really cheap, factory ones are expensive, but none have any warranty of any kind. A few places have a hookup to test it but most you just take your chances.
Resq302 Sep 25th, 05, 3:03 PM My 70 Elky SS 396 has a factory installed AM/FM/STereo with the in dash 8-track. I am in need of some good classic rock group 8-tracks for my elky. What kind of names or bands do you have on them? Feel free to send me a PM. I am especially looking for Aerosmith tracks.
