I have ended up with a 1981 Chevy tandem truck with a BB. Is this of any value? I assume that is a 366, but could be a 427. How do I tell the difference between the two, and is either one is worth more than salvage price?

I suppose you could run the numbers but the only way i would trust it would be to measure the bore. if its a 427 it'll be at least 4.25" when you say "tandem" do you mean dually? if so its probably not a tall deck. one quick way to tell is by looking at the water pump. If the top of the water pump inlet where it bolts to the block is flush with the deck its not a tall deck. if its a tall deck there will be about a half inch between the top of the water pump inlet to the top of the deck. if its a 427 id say its worth something to someone who is looking for one. i see them on ebay once in awhile and they usually want a small fortune for them.

Not a dually, but a C70. An old tandem axle dump truck with a gas motor.

yep, its a tall deck if its the original engine. If it's a 427 I'd hang on to it even if you don't choose to build it. They are a bit unique but can be built up quite nicely.

I bought a complete 427 TD with large oval port heads and two spun rod bearings for $170. If it's in running condition, it's worth more.
Some of the truck engines have the peanut port heads that are worthless for performance over 4-5K rpm.
A complete Tall Deck is VERY easy to distinguish: There are TWO thermostat housings on the intake manifold, and the water pump is GIGANTIC.

The valve covers say that it is a tall deck 427 crate motor, and I am sure that it has the peanut sized heads. Where would be the best place to find a buyer? It runs good, and does not smoke.

i had a virgin 427 tall deck block for a while and gave it to my machinist in exchange for free work , he sold it too a gentleman that wanted it for a race boat stroker and paid good money for it , but i think its only worth what someone will pay at the time
