: How do I get the right color? (PPG expert please!)

I'm getting ready to hand over my 66 Chevelle project to a paint & body man in a few months. He suggested I use PPG Omni, because of the good price. I went to my local PPG dealer. I have a piece of yellow cardboard that I found at work, that is just the color I want. Of course, none of the PPG Omni colors comes close.

This yellow is extremely bright, and the closest thing I could find was Neon Yellow from House of Color brand paint (NE-501)

The paint system I want is BC-CC in PPG urethane. Can I get someone to match the color I want? What kind of PPG paint can this be done with? I don't like going to this dealer near me, they are not very helpful, they don't offer suggestions, they just tell me what can't be done.

I wanted to get a small sample of the mixed color to try out on an old body part. If any of you guys would be willing, I'd like to send someone a piece of this card, and get about 1/2 qt. mixed up. Getting just the right color is very important to me, where the guys at the paint shop don't give a crap.

I know some of you have probably gone through this before, so any advise is surely welcome.

Thanks!

I am not a PPG expert. Mater of fact I am not an expert on any subject. But If I were you i would Walk no run away from that paint
distributer. Mater of fact. I think I would send PPG a nasy/gram.
Why? Did that offer to take a picture/shoot
your sample ? I hate when a jobber takes that
attitude. Treating tha layman off the street
like naw we can't do that this is what we got.
Call around your area to see if some other Body/paint supply house will be more
predestrian freindly.
good luck

Is there another PPG shop anywhere nearby? Omni should be able to be mixed any color that any other paint can. I just shot Omni on my daily driver...went on great and it was pretty cheap.

I'd offer to take your cardboard at my PPG shop but it's a small shop and I don't think they have the color match machine (it's at the main shop downtown).

Good Luck!

The paint shop over here will color match paint samples for a minor fee. They actually spray the paint on a sample and let you take it. It's not PPG that's the problem, it's the paint shop. I've been to some shop that are a pain in the a$$, and there are others that are willing to help.

Or you could just buy the house of kolor paint.. I did, sprays nice, and works like any other paint. Plus you can pick it up more inexpensively at www.autobodysupply.net (http://www.autobodysupply.net) either way.. good luck!

I visited the autobodystore, I guess the Neon Yellow is mainly for graphics, they do not recommend it for a full paint job, as it will fade too easily. Besides, it's hard to tell with a chip, the neon just doesn't sound right anyway.

Any of you guys with bright yellow cars, I could sure use your help/advise!

The color I'm looking for is a bit brighter than the one guys old pickup truck from shade tree mechanic/crank and chrome.

The other yellow I like is the one that I see on a lot of the 70 Buick GS', you know, with the black stripes & wing. That's the color I want!

Any picture/advise is certainly appreciated!

I have a friend of mine that just painted a 70 chevelle Chrome Yellow in PPG. I will have to get the paint code and a picture. It is a really nice color and goes well with the black stripes. I will get a pic and send it out.

Well I work for PPG and some shops just are not interested in spending the time that is necessary to get a match perfect. Some bigger shops have color match machines( like X-rites) that can read the color and then enter into a database to find the closest match and then tint from there if needed. Also be willing to look at the other PPG technologies if needed to get the color right.

I would find another PPG dealer near you that has the ability to match the color for you. I have seen some people walk in with a cup with a off blue decal and want the color matched for there car so it can be done.

For yellow I would probably go with a tinted primer so that the paint will cover easier and with less material since yellows are known to require high film build to completely cover the prime.

I myself have a 66 chevelle that I will soon spray the original lemonwood yellow and I will go the tinted prime route also.

One other question, what clear are you going to use. I personally sugguest going with the 2002 concept clear. It lays down very well and builds film quickly so wet sanding is then uneventful afterwards.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for all your help guys, but I only have two PPG dealers in my area, and neither has the equipment, nor are they willing to help me.

I have some more questions, maybe analyte can help me with these. (nice handle by the way!)

Instead of trying to get my own custom Yellow mixed up, I've always loved the Saturn Yellow that was used on 1970 Buick GSX's

I have a PPG paint code here for Saturn Yellow in Ditzler - 81838

Can I get this same color in the Omni paint line???

Thanks again!!

Without any books in front of me, I'm not sure. The best way is to call your PPG dealer and ask. I don't see why it wouldn't( guessing!), but if not they probably have something really close or they can maybe just pull the formula and mix you up some.
