Musician here, I play violin (or fiddle, depending on the style), viola, guitar, a little mandolin, a few notes on bass. My living room looks like a music store rummage sale :)
I studied classical music most of my life and used to play semi-professionally in theatre orchestras, weddings, etc... Now I play bluegrass, rock, blues, whatever. Been in some cover bands and done some studio work for local singer/writers. I'm most actively involved in a bluegrass band right now (check the link in my sig).

Playing gigs helped me pay for alot of the work on my chevelle!

Been playing guitar since I was 14. Never got really good, but I'm told I'm a solid rhythm player, and I can do a bit of lead. Been in cover bands since about 1983. It's one of the few things I refused to give up/compromise on during my marriage...it's just too great of a release for me. I'm currently in a band called "Off The Record" here in Vegas. No illusions of growing up to be a rock star, just love to do it, and the audience seems to like it.

My children both play piano, and my youngest is learning guitar. They both have been in state, county, regional and national honor choirs. My oldest spent 3 weeks touring Europe in a choir/orchestra group called "Sound of America" filled with great talent from across the country. I'm truly happy that music has opened so many opportunities for everyone in my family. Like you, I've got a 15'x25' room devoted to music...Drums on one end, piano on the other, and the side wall covered with guitar amps & PA gear. Good to know there are others out there. o\oo/

I am a guitar player too. Had guitars for 30 years. never really got "good" either. Never been good enough to be "The Guitar Player" in a band, but am better than "NO Guitar Player" in the band ! :)

Studied piano for about 10 years. Played in a lot of original and cover bands up until the mid 80's, then gave it up. Have played keyboards and bass in cover and studio work. Was real fortunate to do some great studio work in Phila. back in the late 70's early 80's. Have a large room (24' x 32') on the end of the house that is still just dedicated to music- Grand piano, stereo gear, collection of guitars and NO TV - all my kids were performing artists also.

Hey Tom,

Maybe if you changed the spelling of your name to Hendr"ix" you'd get some sort of karmic musical infusion and smoke all of us half-baked guitar players. ;)

Played bass from 14-25 or so, then switched to guitar (was tired of being called a "frustrated guitar player" when I didn't even have one)

Anyone else find it funny that my youngest son's name is James Marshall?

As in "amps"? If so, it seems a fitting tribute. Somehow I can't imagine my ex-wife allowing me to name one of our daughters "Ibenez" or "Peavey"...probably a good thing though don'tcha think? ;)

Actually no... I "accidentally" named my son James marshall by taking names from family... The other James Marshall is James Mashall hendrix.... My hippie neighbor across the street realized it immediately....

If you want a good trivia question ask someone what Jimi Hendrix' name was when he was two - he was Johnny Allen Hendrix, then when he was about four it was changed to James Marshall Hendrix. Coincidently, he died on this day in 1970.

started playing guitar in high school. did some cover band stuff in the 60's detroit area. still enjoy a bit of jammin' but not often enough. daughter plays piano well and son picked up the guitar in high school also. only he really took off with it, never saw anyone learn so fast. by the time he graduated from college he was very accomplished. i have a u.s. strat, a homemade tele, a 335 a bandmaster amp (circa 1964) and a newer marshall. dang now you got me thinking i should dig up that strat and hit some licks tonite. pic of homemade tele below, strat in background.

I started playing drums 42 years ago at the age of 10. Later on I went to bass. I dabbled a little on guitar and keyboards.
Just last winter me and my lifelong best friend (who played music with me from day one until 1985), got back together and have been doing some recording on an 8 track digital recorder. I've been doing the drum, bass, keyboard, and vocal tracks, and he does the guitars, harmonica, and some vocals.
It's been a lot of fun. It beats the heck out of the old reel to reel recorder we used to use.

Saxophonist here. I played in the high school band, and I also played with a couple of 'Blue Bros' type bands back in the early 70's. I was the only white guy. LOL. Played a lot of scary black clubs way back in the woods. I was young and fearless. Made a lot of friends and drank of lot of ????? Don't really know what is was, but it really got you high! I wouldn't do that now for any amount of money.

I've been playing guitar since about 7th grade (i was 13.), I am now in 11th (turnin 17 in about a month!!). I have fun kickin' out some lead, all my friends say I'm the best in our school (about 2,500 kids). I've never had lessons, I just learned every Metallica song and now I can play guitar. :D My major influences are Metallica, Pantera, SRV, Skynyrd, Megadeth, AC/DC, etc.

I can't call myself a musician, but I've been messing around on the guitar for probably 7 or more years. I own an electric, acoustic, and bass guitar. My dad gave me the bass (it was his first bass from back in the 70s). Never have taken lessons. Wish I could play better than I do, just never really applied myself. I have fun playing the riffs and parts of songs that I can play :D .

I'll list the instruments I play, in order that I first picked them up. Recorder (anyone who went to elementary school probably has that one), piano, trumpet, baritone sax, alto sax, guitar, drums, steel drums (doubles).

I stuck with the guitar and drums. I've played guitar for about 6 or 7 years now, drums for about 5.

On a side note, some of you may remember me posting about my new Gibson SG a while back. Well, about a month ago I was cleaning it and noticed a small crack on the neck, near the 12th fret, about 3" long. I freaked out a bit and started checking all over to see what else could be wrong with it. I flipped it over to check the other side of the neck and discovered a crack down the entire length of the neck. This crack wasn't there a week ago, and no, the guitar had not been dropped or struck.

I took it in to the dealer that sold it to me, to see if it was repairable, and if so, if it was under warranty. The first thing out of the guys mouth was "Wow!, look at that, the whole fingerboard is coming off the neck", then he called his coworkers to come see. They had never seen it happen before. He advised me to send it in to Gibson for evaluation. I did so about 3 weeks ago. Last week I called to check the status of the guitar, and was told it was un-repairable. :( Gibson is going to be replacing my guitar. I asked if it was possible to buy back the old guitar (so I could mount it on the wall), the answer was no, it is to be destroyed.

So Gibson is giving me a new guitar, I don't know which model they're giving me yet, but how do you replace a limited edition model like mine was?

I got my drums for $600. The hardest work involved was fitting them in my moms car. The store was closing and had to liquidate.

Say, you wouldn't happen to be closing out any time soon would you? :D

I started playing drums when I was 10 but we moved to an apartment so I sold them. At 12 I started playing trumpet in the school band and through school I also picked up the trombone and baritone. I got a guitar for Christmas when I was 13 (I'm 45 now) and have been playing it ever since. I don't know if I could play a note on the previous instruments now. In the late 70's early 80's I played the cabaret circuit while still working a full time day job. That was a tough grind for a couple years. We played mostly classic rock like Skynyrd, (my fave) CCR, ZZTop, John Melencamp, Clapton, Beatles, Van Halen, plus some origional stuff. I'm not much of a lead player and never really had the ambition to be one. I prefer to play rhythem and sing although there's a few tunes that I HAVE TO play lead on. ;) Here's a pic of my favorite axe that I've owned for about 25 years now. It's an Ibanez RoadstarII and I've always been a sucker for a cherry sunburst guitar. My 79 Les Paul standard that I bought new had the same colors.

http://www2.nethop.net/~rednecks/misc/dcp02270.jpg

I don't play the Ibanez much anymore but it's there when I want to. Now when a musician buddy comes over we usually just rattle off a few tunes on the acoustics.

I've got an old restored player piano in the living room, I'm also pretty darned good when it comes to tuning in the radio or sticking a CD in the player.

Short of those, unless singing counts, I'm out!!

I'm not really a musician, but mix for our church's contemporary worship band. We've recorded one CD, and are starting to work on another. I am also (time permitting) trying to learn to play the bass guitar. I have a 4 string Music Man Stingray. I don't think I would enjoy playing bass more than mixing, though.
