: Painting a dash
Revs Hi Jan 21st, 04, 12:49 PM I'm having my 66 repainted and my painter wants to remove the windsheild to repaint the upper dash. The interior is completely out of the car, so overspray is no problem. I hate to take the "perfect" windshield out and risk breaking it. All opinions are appreciated!! Thanks!
Texas70 Jan 21st, 04, 2:21 PM I would remove the dash and prep and paint as needed, then re-install. You said the "perfect windshield"....if that is the case, you definitely do not want to disturb it. That's my opinion ;)
Revs Hi Jan 21st, 04, 2:41 PM Thanks for the reply. I have removed the dash, I was refering to the upper dash(that can't be removed) next to the windsheild. The front edge is covered by the dash pad, the rear will be body colored. I know my painter wants to do a good job, but has anyone painted this area with the windsheild in??
zachscc Jan 21st, 04, 8:13 PM Spend $10 on a windshield removing wire, and $10 more on a tube of silicon window seal at your paint supplier. It is easier than you think!!! ;)
LKN BCK Jan 21st, 04, 9:23 PM Sounds like you are going to have yourself a great looking Hotrod!!! If I saw your car and this upper dash area was rusty in the corners, pitted, flaking, or even faded I would have to ask myself why would the owner not also repaint the upper dash when he did the rest of the car??? graemlins/clonk.gif
I also have a 66 and I can tell you this area is very noticable and looked at by most Chevelle lovers. If that area does not look as good as the rest of car...It will be a SORE spot. You will wish you had repainted it when your bodyman suggested to do it.
If it has any of the problems mentoined above there could be more to come, probably sooner than later... with that said,my opinion is take out windsheild NOW... and repaint while the paintgun has paint in it...If the windshield and trim fit good now,it should fit good when replaced!!!
Revs Hi Jan 22nd, 04, 12:40 AM Thanks for the replys!! I agree the upper dash area is a very noticable area on the car. I'm using the best painter in the region, and he's very fussy. I'm sure he just wants to do it right. I'll have a very expensive show paint job, I guess it's worth the risk of breaking the windsheild to have it look as good as the exterior. Thanks.....Revs
Texas70 Jan 22nd, 04, 11:49 AM After realizing exactly what area you are talking about, I say definitely remove the windshield graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Her Malibu Jan 23rd, 04, 8:04 PM I agree wiyh with ZACHSCC take it out, I removed my front & rear glass, took about an hour by myself,I would use the silicone ribbon, you can get it at the same paint store you get the wire to cut it out with(If you make your painter happy you will be happy in the end)

68Elkie Jan 23rd, 04, 8:25 PM I agree, you definitely want to take the windshield out. I took mine out and wound up cracking it. I was scraping the black butyl off the edges and apparently hit something in the glass that caused it to start cracking. Point is, if you're going to clean it, use chemicals.
A new windshield looks pretty too.
Revs Hi Jan 24th, 04, 1:49 AM Thanks guys. I thought he was right, but I had to ask. Cary
sevt_chevelle Jan 24th, 04, 5:30 PM Why not call your local auto glass company have them take out the glass?
The shop am at we dont mess with any glass, just call up Iowa glass they show up at the shop and remove the glass.
The price for removal and reinstall is like 35 bucks. The glass guys remove and install tons of windshields they are alot more skilled at removal then you will be. Just my opinion...Eric
Purs Jan 24th, 04, 5:47 PM Take the glass out for sure. Me and a friend repainted my whole dash and I decided to leave the windshield in. The rest of the dash looks excellent, however when we went to shoot the clear on the upper part of the dash it didn't lay down to good because of the difficult position of the spray gun. I will defintely be worth the effort to take the windshield out. Good luck.
