How can you test to find out what type of paint you have on your car (i.e. lacquer, enamel, base coat clear coat, etc.
Thanks, M22

This a difficult question. This is my extent of knowledge. Well, a quick trip to a quality paint shop to ask an expert may be easier, but if you want to try yourself......
If it's not hardened paint (cheapest paint u can buy) take a rag with some laquer thinner on it and rub heavily on an inconspicuous location. If the color comes off, it's enamel. Or laquer.....Enamel will have a much 'thicker' appearance. It's also softer. Enamel will come off with a enamel reducer. Laquer is a very 'hard' paint. If the paint passes the above test, go to the next.
Base coat Clear coat: again, in another inconspicuous place, take a piece of 1,000 grit paper and sand a little. If color comes off, it's not BC/CC. If a whit dust appears on the paper, it's BC/CC, unless it's white underneath.... This is not an easy thing to explain. Anyone else??? What color is it you want to test? Also, if this is relation to do a complete paint job, you have to keep in mind just how much material is on the car now. If it's more than 6-8 mls. STRIP IT. How do know that you ask? A painters paint thickness meter. Go to a shop.
