What I did was take off my old vynel top on my 70 velle and discover a bunch of surface rust. My question is now that I have taken it down to bare metal should I put some kind of rust treatment on because there is still some pitting that I can't clean out completely or will an etching primer keep the rust from coming back? thanks Gary

If you have a wire wheel, you can use that to try to get into the tiny spots. Just be sure not to leave it sitting in one area too long, or else it will heat up and warp the metal. I would then clean it with a good surface cleaner/etch solution, wash it off and then let dry.

Shoot some etch primer over the top and then maybe some epoxy primer. I ground mine down, put some POR15, because the rust was really bad.

What you want to do is convert the rust that is there, neutralize it and then seal out any moisture that might get it. The etch primer is designed mainly for that reason. I am thinking of going back and preparing mine this way instead of just the POR15 as a base.
